Chapter 23

RAE

Large black paws thundered on the ground in front of me. Trees wheezed past as if I was going impossibly fast. The wind blew in my face, and I felt free for the first time in forever. Unburdened.

But I also felt the hot flames of anger licking my spine.

Everything was blurry except the target in front of me.

I knew he was my target. Besides the anger, a hunger I’d never felt before gnawed at me as I watched the man running ahead. He couldn’t see me, but I knew he sensed me. His blue plaid shirt flapped behind him as he screamed for help. Occasionally, he looked back, his brown eyes filled with fear. I got the tingles, amplified like I was on steroids. I tasted the fear in the air.

And it tasted amazing.

My mouth watered as I circled the man and slowed down. I could see where I was now—the park, close to the back, where no one ever really went because of the overgrown trees. The city never bothered with them because they provided an unofficial boundary between the two sides
