My mind alternated between rage and numbness, and my heart... Vickie had ripped it to shreds. Standing at the intersection at the top of Vickie’s road, my fists clenched and unclenched. Going back to her house would be a bad idea, and yet this pain in my chest caused by Vickie’s betrayal was unbearable and demanded retribution. I didn’t want to believe it, but everything made so much sense now.

I should have paid more attention to all my early insecurities about why a girl like Vickie would be in my life. She was the first person I saw when I woke from my coma. The Montgomery heir was my loudest cheerleader, the one who was genuinely extremely happy when I surpassed all the doctor’s expectations and learned to walk again. She never thought I was strange like everyone else in town. There had never been any hint of malice or deceit in her emotions towards me.
