"Hello there," the man at the front chimed, his grin stretching unnaturally wide. "I'm Pete, Lyra's friend."

Sensing something amiss, Gina turned and called out to Mr. Jones. Sensing her unease, Mr. Jones set aside the newspaper and approached the door. "How can I help you gentlemen?" he inquired, eyeing them warily.

The man named Pete repeated his introduction, insisting that they were there to see if Lyra was home. Mr. Jones furrowed his brow. "If you all are her friends, how is it that I've never seen or heard of any of you before?" he questioned, his tone sharp.

The men faltered slightly, attempting to force yet another unnatural smile, "We are her friends from school, and we are here to check if she is home." Their teeths remained open to maintain the stupid smile.
