Noah and I sat across each other. Noah was still as tense as before. His jaw hardened, and he kept clenching his fists. I, on the other hand, felt numb. I didn’t know what to feel about his words.

“So?” I began.

“I’m still not sure about it, Violette. That’s why I’m avoiding you. Seeing you keep making me want to tell you everything, but I’m afraid I’d get your hope up.”

Ignoring his words, I asked, “Where have you seen her before?”

Noah lowered his hands and hid them under the table while his gaze averting mine. His leg kept moving anxiously as I waited. I was nervous myself. Despite telling my heart not to soar high because of the possibility of Noah knowing my mother, I couldn’t help but hope.

“As I said, I’m not sure. When I saw the picture, I only thought she looked awfully familiar to one of my supporters before my father’s death.”
