Unexpected Visitor

The sheer fabric of her white dress clung to her skin as the night breeze from the kitchen window blew in. Her hands shook as she poured herself another cup of black coffee. The only light in the room was from the glow of her phone screen and some of the garden lights that found their way inside the house from the open kitchen window. She didn't open any of her lights because she didn't want her landlady to know that she was still awake. She doesn’t want to sleep but her body, infused with too much caffeine, was already shaking. Her body started to feel tiredness and numbness from lack of sleep.

She put down the coffee mug—afraid to break it too, just like the other mugs that are already in the trash bin. She knew that she had too much caffeine in her body and she must stop. And yet, the thought of falling asleep and being trapped in her nightmares was enough for her to pick up the cup of coffee despite the trembling of her hands and her body jerking to the crackl
