40. Wrecked in Trouble

Charles went straight to his study. He was surprised by Antonia's revelation even though it wasn't obvious. He was convinced that Maureen was a gold digger but he was perplexed by her decision to leave.

He didn't understand. It appeared unreasonable since he believed that he was her target all along. In his view, there was no way that Maureen would quit her job. He felt that desperate girls never gave up.

He was convinced that Maureen was going to come back and even if she didn't, he believed that she was probably too ashamed that her plans failed and left.

Charles realised that she didn't wait for her send-off pay and that was the most confusing of all his thoughts.

Even if she was ashamed, why would a desperate girl leave without money? Besides, it could be her compensation for their time together. Charles knew that a desperate lady would threaten to announce what happened between them and as such he would have to pay for her silence.
