My blood turned cold and my fingers trembled around my phone as I read the text. It was Ben who sent people to shoot at me. It wasn’t a rival mafia gang trying to pass a message to Vito.

The Ben I knew wouldn’t have done that to me. Maybe prison had completely changed him into a horrible person.

I was confused about what to do. Vito said he was going to make sure Ben didn’t bother me but I guess he hadn’t done whatever he planned to do, except he didn’t consider him a real threat.

I didn’t respond to the message and I dialed Ellie’s number instead. After waiting for seconds that seemed like forever, she picked up.

“I almost got shot.” I muttered under my breath and cleared my throat.

“What?” I could tell she was dumbfounded. “What do you mean you almost got shot? That’s the reason why I didn’t like the idea of you having anything to do with a mafia boss. Are you okay? Where are you?” Ellie blurted out with panic in her voice.

“It wasn’t because of Vito. It was Ben.
