Rachel nodded in acknowledgment. "Alright, I'll sign it."

She was about to follow the doctor back into the operating room when Maxwell suddenly grabbed her hand.

Rachel was bewildered and asked, "Max, you… What are you doing?"

"We're not proceeding with this surgery," Maxwell replied solemnly with a darkened expression.

Rachel was overwhelmed with joy by his words. "Max, is this true? Don't make it hard for yourself. I'm fine, really. Let's just go ahead with it. As long as you're happy in the future, I'll be at peace."

But Maxwell wrestled with his conscience. He knew he could not be that selfish.

Though he did not want to lose Jennifer, he could not rob a woman of her chance to become a mother.

The surgery was too risky, and Maxwell did not want Rachel to take that chance.

And so, he led Rachel out.
