I opened the door with a sense of anticipation, but my heart skipped a beat when I saw Hope standing next to a police officer. His inquisitive eyes landed on me.

"Good afternoon, ma'am. Are you the girl's mother?" the officer inquired, and a wave of apprehension washed over me.

Nervously, I nodded. "Yes, I'm her mother. What happened?"
