His pain made my heart bleed. I could literally taste it, and it was the weirdest thing that had ever happened to me. I wanted him to be happy and have some form of peace, but it was increasingly difficult to achieve.

“Maya, I wish that this whole mess never happened," Mike said softly.

I nodded against his chest. “Me too.”

“I will protect you from the hell that’s going on now. Trust me Maya. I won’t lose you like I lost my parents.”

“I know. I’m positive that you will do all you can to make me happy. I know I can always count on you Mike. You’ve done so much for me. You’ve been my source of strength,” I whispered softly.

He squeezed my arm. “Hopefully, I will keep being that for us,” he said softly. I rubbed his chest. “I will figure how to handle the issues surrounding my parents. Go to sleep now. It’s a long day ahead tomorrow.” I nodded.

I nodded, as he turned off the light. I closed my eyes tightly as I knew he would be doing too. I didn’t want to think about anything
