Ryeleigh I am about to shift for the first time, and I could not be more excited and scared. I have dreamed of my first shift since I was a little girl. Ryeleigh As I get ready, my mom knocks on the door and does not wait for me to answer. She enters and declares, “Oh honey, you look beautiful. This is such an exciting day for you and the family. Your dad and brother are downstairs, waiting to see you in your ceremonial dress.” She spoke it so fast; I wonder if she even took a breath. My mother is having a hard time knowing her only girl is growing up. “Thanks, Mom. I really love you, but I need to meditate, and the Elders said, ‘no stress or talking one hour before the ceremony.’” I answer to get her to leave and give me my last few minutes as a non-shifter. The ceremony is still more than an hour away, but if I gave her a chance, she would talk the whole time. “You don’t have to ask me twice. Ryeleigh A loud voice coming from the screen quiets the room and asks us to stand. Amory Cruz in his ceremonial robe, looking regal and a true Alpha example of the perfect shifter. We are not raised thinking of the Amory like a god; however, in this situation, it feels as if he is. With equal parts fear and amazement, the crowd quiets to a soft purr. “Welcome family, friends, clans, and alphas, to the beginning of these adult shifters’ lives. Cormac Today is a make-or-break day for me. Being a foster child, my changing ceremony differs from those of a family member. I can imagine Ryeleigh, and Raven being bombarded by family giving tips and trying to make their day perfect. For me, I am alone in a dorm to fend for myself. No one came to answer my questions. RyeleighSitting in the car with Raven heading back in her car, I replay the exchange I had with Cormac. I have dreamed of Cormac holding me since I was 13 and saw him as more than a stinky boy. He went through his change today too; he is a true Berserker, an alpha bear. During the ceremony, after I saw the Amory dead, he just held me as I sobbed into him. I can still hear the screams of others, but in his arms, I felt at home and calm in the middle of a storm. Cormac is a bear and I have a feeling he could hold down the fort single-handedly.” I smile as my brother talks about his best friend. Even Bram’s mind is fluttering. I cannot get a read on either of them. My mother, however, is an open book and her fear is palpable. “You better not leave her side. Protect her with your life.” My mother leaves, but in her wake, I can feel the inevitability of her feelings as the others process the information. Cormac“Bram, stop. Who is that guy going into Rye’s room?” A man walks toward Ryes’ room and goes in like he owns the place. He is about 6 foot tall in sweats and a hoodie, which is odd because it is still pretty hot in Texas, so most of us are in shorts after the ceremony, and no one is in a jacket.
