Thirty Six

Mrs. Afonso sighed before watching Mike retreat from the room without any other questions; he looked sad as he pulled his leg all the way through the stair. She knew a day like this was going to come. A day Mike would question everything around him, and not just sit down and obey their instruction as they hoped, but it was getting closer than she had expected. After she was certain she couldn’t hear the boy’s footsteps any more, she followed also, but to her room.
