A few years later

Joe Wolford walked down the hallway. He'd never get used to the ceiling, which seemed to be alive.

The drawings from the war they'd fought a few years earlier.

It wasn't exactly a victory.

He'd lost a lot.

Emily wrapped her hand around his arm.

He nodded at her.

She'd been the one who helped him walk through his pain. She'd been his pillar.

"It's beautiful", he said taking a deep breath.

"But not as beautiful as me", she said.

He laughed. "Yeah. You're the most beautiful woman in the world".

"Most beautiful? Now you're too much", she said with a smile.

"Most beautiful. In the whole wide world".

They reached the end of the hallway.

"Just a reminder. I never wanted to be here", he sighed.

"It's his birthday, Joe".

He sighed again. He'd never thought he'd meet the crocodile man from Club Go again.

Now they were family friends.

Emily knocked at the door.

"Joe! ".

Joe sighed again, feeling his heart sink.

Emily rubbed his back.
