“Where did this come from?” I asked. I already knew what it was. It couldn’t be a coincidence that the day Meghan’s body was found with a missing finger is the same day my wife found a severed finger.

“It was in my room. On my bed.” She swallowed. “I think it was meant for me.”

That would perfectly alight with Heston’s suspicion. Once Meghan was reported missing, Angelica would find her severed finger and probably scream about it. That’s how everyone would hear the tale of me killing my sister and keeping her finger as s souvenir—as if I was interested in the ring finger of a woman I didn’t care about.

The media would be overjoyed to publish twisted stories about it anyway. They had cornered me when I left the police headquarters and I had to give them some crumbs and evade them on my way home and there weren’t even any juicy details about it yet. If word of this got out in the wrong way, I would be toast.

I pulled her to her feet and hugged her. “Are you okay?”
