Adara went upstairs to shower after Declan had parked in front of the house. She used jet lag as an excuse to go to bed early. The truth was, she was hurt and angry and lonely. She just wanted a moment alone and Declan had looked at her in such a way that she knew he wanted to have her naked underneath him.Even though she was in love with Declan, sleeping with him made her feel guilty. I sat on the bed holding her ring and I felt the drowning sensation of loss. I listened to her footsteps go down the stairs, the front door open and shut again. Adrian Peters sat in his car and looked at the house. He knew that Jeff Smith was inside. Jeff’s wife had died two years earlier, leaving him to care for their six-year-old twin daughters, China and India, by himself. They were identical twins and they reminded Adrian of little porcelain dolls.Jeff spent most of his time at home, writing books for children.
