CARMEN

“Please, hold on for a second. I need to make an important call,” I said to the taxi driver as I pulled out my phone and dialed Mariah’s number with my heart in my throat as the detectives walked around.

“Carmen, are is that you?” Mariah asked after picking up the phone.

“Yes, I’m right in front of the house, but there are detectives loitering around. They’re definitely going to recognize me if I come out of the car, and they might start to suspect something if nobody gets out of the car.”

“I’ll get the garage door open. You can get off in the garage without being seen,” she said, hanging up.

In the next few seconds, the door to the garage opened and I convinced the driver to take me in there, to which he grumbled out that I would have to pay him extra for his time.

The garage door was lowered just enough for me to get out of the car and pay the driver without being seen as a door on the side of the wall connecting the garage to the house opened.
