CHAPTER THIRTEEN

He smirked and went in the deer's direction.

I swaggered down the brook's edge. In the air, there was a strange humming sound. It sounded like a swarm of bees buzzing around. After that, the buzzing moved to the granite beneath my feet. I felt a tingle that traveled up to my fingertips as it passed through my body. As I turned the bend, the source of the noise became apparent.

It was a raging torrent of water. At this distance, the wrinkled face of the mountain appeared to have silver tear tracks. It was tiered and sunk to the bottom of a turquoise pool. As I got closer, the cataract began to make more noise. It was rumbling and snarling at the same time. At the base, it foamed up into a lather. As I approached, the cascade seemed to blend into different threads of watery fabric. It looked like liquid silver was trickling down the rocks in a loom. The noise had become a cacophony.
