"I forbid it!" The mere mention of another man ignited an unnameable fury in Bruno's heart.

"What gives you the right to forbid?" Lizzie asked, a faint smile on her lips. "Jacob is a thousand times, no, a million times better than you, you devil, you beast."

She had endured enough playing along with his games, why should she be subject to his desires?

"Is that so? It seems you're not yet satisfied, are you?" Bruno retorted, smiling at her defiance, this stubbornly naive girl.

Lizzie turned away, refusing to look at him. She thought that as long as she resigned herself to her fate, that she behaved as a wife in name only, it would be enough. But now, having lost her body, she must protect her heart above all.
