Chapter 4 – We meet once again

Jack's POV

Half a year have passed since Emily’s death. During this time, I have travelled around quite a few countries meeting new people, learning new things and I have also come across a few witches who helped me with honing my new discovered powers.

Despite them wanting me to stay, I decided to not as I came to realise the longer, I stayed in one place the more danger it would bring to someone. And I hate to lose and burden more innocent people.

And as for the current situation, I am in the US. I have travelled to a lot of places, trying to find if there are any survivors alongside clues of who the true perpetrators are and the purpose of their attack. And for some reason I have always believed the true aim of theirs is to target me, but for what reason I am uncertain of.

But overlooking that, I finally arrived at the US from the Witch’s den which was a long ship journey lasting 6 days. And if it wasn’t because of me being a wolf, I feel like I would die from seasickness. I mean I was fine until like the second day when I felt like I was going to puke my guts out but then I suddenly felt hyped the next day after a full 24-hour rest or something. And luckily, there was no big problems from day 3 onwards until I arrived at the US. I guess I should be thankful of my supernatural identity here.

Thinking back, I am now far away from that small village I used to call home where me and Emily have lived peacefully for 4 years.

Everyone I have seen still calls me by the name of Jack, I am still disguised as a boy, but I have a change of appearance including my original brown hair now is silver (or white) with some light blue linings like my wolf and my eyes were disguised as light blue with a spec of purple and red through the use of my powers that was awakened (due to the transformation at the end of the previous chapter).

Due to having only a few dollars on me, (majority being spent on travel expenses) I had to go and live in the forest for a while.

As I was walking around the forest trying to find a safe place to sleep, I decided that somewhere high is the best to hide myself in.

I ran around the area of the forest making sure I am not going into any pack territory; and then I found a perfect tree that looks durable and very tall.

As it was already night-time, I climbed up the tree and rested myself on it and gazed upon the sky thinking of everything that has been happening throughout my life since my 5th birthday.

It's like every single time my birthday arrives there is always something bad that would happen.

Even though Valentine's Day (the day of my birthday) should be a day to celebrate, now I came to realise it's not, and that I would never ever celebrate my birthday with anyone again.

I covered myself in a blanket which I ‘kindly’ borrowed from the boat I boarded for 6 days, snoozing in attempting to stop my train of thoughts. Alongside the blanket, I have also taken some necessities such as a backpack which I have stuffed with food, money, water, and most importantly an envelope from Emily that I still have not mustered up my courage to open yet.

I looked at the envelope and with my shaky hands, I scanned my palms around it, uncertain of whether I should open it or not. Missing the warmth and voice of Emily but unable to see or hear her just like how everyone else have left my life was a painful experience. But knowing I should not envelop myself in darkness, knowing that there is nothing else I can do, knowing she is now dead, I know this was the last moment I have with Emily, I believe it was about time I should see what the content of this letter is and overcome my fears.

Slowly but gently opening the letter, not wanting to crease or injure any part of the envelop, ensuring I could later repair it to its original state, I swiftly peeled the top of the envelop to open it and slowly pull out the thin piece of paper from within.

“Happy 14th birthday Jack!” was the first sentence that appeared at the top of the paper when I unfolded it before it carried on.

“I know you have gotten through a lot over the past few years with just me and you. I enjoyed staying with you and teaching you everything I know about fighting. I treat you like a daughter and I wish we could always stay like this, but my life is ending soon, I know you would be upset and blame yourself, but I must tell you it's not your fault. To be honest half a year ago, I was rejected by my mate when I went to work one day, he was with another girl. This led my wolf to be in great pain, and both of us became weak and just a few days ago she died.”

“I want to tell you this because I know I won't survive over this day, so I wrote this letter. And I want to tell you that I love you! And that no matter what you must survive.”

Touching the piece of thin paper and seeing little droplets fall onto it before sinking into the paper leaving marks on it, I raised my hands out from the branches above me, believing it was raining but instead the droplets were not from the clouds above but instead from my eyes. Closing my eyes, I questioned myself, “How did I not realise this?” I have stayed with Emily for a long-time and through the past couple of weeks I have never seen her release her wolf form, her complexion also looked off. “Why did I never question it? Why did I never bring this up?”

Pulling my head up, trying to hone my emotions in, I clenched my fists, hating the fact that I was unable to help, unable to realise her pain, unable to save her.

As memories of me and Emily being together flooded my mind, I wiped away my tears. I know I am not weak, Emily and everyone have trained me, taught me everything they have ever known, we fought and worked together. There was no way I was weak, and I do not want to be weak, I need to get stronger, I need to get strong enough that I am able to get revenge not just for Emily but also for both Healer Moon and Full Moon Pack who treated me with love.

As I calmed down, I folded the letter and put it back in my bag. I looked up into the sky and knew that the days ahead of me may be a harsh and uneasy path to take, but I must endure. With that in mind, I must first regain my energy, closing my eyes and attempting to have a good night rest.

However, that did not happen as a sudden snap of the twig awoken me, causing me to be on high alert. Looking down I could see around 5 wolves and I can feel 6 more coming towards us from a 1 km radius from the north.

I am surrounded but from their actions they don't know I am up in the trees, so the best cause of action is making a surprise attack.

When all the wolves turned their back away from the trunk I jumped down and caught 2 by surprise and hit them in the abdomen with 1 punch making them unconscious.

I was then ready to go and attack the other 3 when they turned over, but I was suddenly halted when one of the werewolves transformed back into their human form, and yes without any clothes on which is common in the werewolf society.

As we glanced at each other, I wondered who this man standing right in front of me was thinking. I mean who would transform back to their more vulnerable state when an enemy tries to attach them? I mean, only a person with a death wish would do that!

But with a few seconds of silence with no one daring to make a single move, we stared at each other until I find the man standing right in front of me to look quite familiar however I couldn’t make out who they were until…

“Jack?”

This caught me by surprise as I got into a more cautious stand, not knowing whether the person standing in front of me was a friend or foe.

But as I took a step back, the man took a step forward and had a bright smile on his face, “It’s me, Jacob!” He said happily. And as his features became more clearer and hearing his voice alongside his name, something suddenly flushed through my mind.

“Jacob?” I questioned whilst the man nodded enthusiastically, “okay, if you truly say who you are, then tell me what happened at our first meeting?” I said whilst the smile on Jacob’s face suddenly falls.

He looked around at the people surrounding us before looking back at me then on the ground before scratching his neck, “hehehe, do I have to?” He asked quite embarrassed which made me smile as I loosened my fist, “Okay, you don’t have to” I said and smiled.

Confirming that it was Jacob, I mean the first time we meant, he was beaten up by the 5 years old me who have escaped the tragedy of my pack’s abolition and ever since that incident, I have disguised my eye colours and dressed as a boy so I cannot be associated back to the Healer Moon Pack, but it seems like those killers won’t let go until they get what they want.

Just as me and Jacob was chatting, another werewolf from behind signalled for Jacob through the mind link before we broke our conversation and from that I knew that something was happening, and potentially it may have to do with something with the group of men following behind them.

With that Jacob’s expression suddenly turned serious, “come with us” he said to me whilst I hesitated but nevertheless nodded and followed suit.
