Chapter 78

Bas POV

Days had passed since my last conversation with Becca, but all I could think about was the hurt in her eyes. I had wanted to stay away, but the moment I sensed she was in danger, I had to step in. I had been gone for four years, and those years felt like torture without her. Some days were bearable, while others were so difficult that I had to find her, even if only to see her from afar.

I missed her so badly that it took everything in me not to hug her. What held me back were her mother's words.

With a sigh, I looked away and saw Aubrey approaching. Her eyes were filled with worry as she took a step closer.

"Are you okay?" she asked gently. "You've been like this ever since the graveyard."

"I'm fine," I said, though my voice lacked conviction.

She stepped closer until she was just inches from me, her hands slowly running down my bicep as she gazed into my eyes. "Bas, do you remember what I told you the day you saved my life?" she asked softly.
