“Damien,” the man on the other side of the phone answered with surety after I asked him what it would take for me to get my mother, and I fell into an abyss of confusion.

“What do you mean by that? How do you know his name? Just tell me what you want,” I asked, knowing fully well that I was getting glances from the driver seated beside me but not caring anyway.
