The people fell silent. Everyone stared at North and waited for her answer.

Melinda’s eyes shone with cunning, but she still had a sad look on her face. “North, on behalf of the children in the mountains, I’m begging you to let it go.”

“You donated my mother’s necklace in your name so that everyone would thank you?”

Melinda shook her head as if she was exercising great tolerance toward North. “That’s not what I meant. You’re the heiress of the Myers family and are used to a life of luxury, so you wouldn’t understand how much the children in the mountains suffer. I just want to help them.
