Chapter 62

Rayne's POV

I went to check up on Bradford afterwards, drawn there by a deep sense of duty and guilt. He had barely gotten to enjoy the return of his mate, and now another tragedy had struck.

On the hospital bed, he looked too still, too quiet. His chest barely even rose or fell, and the bandage around it had turned slightly yellow from the discharge of his wound.

From his side, sunken in a chair, Sal's voice reached me. It sounded like it had been weighed down by her sadness and worry. It hung in the air, tired and devoid of warmth. It made me think about Kaiden, and how he must have felt. Their eyes had shared the same look. Empty, but struggling to hold on to light.

“How's he doing?” I asked, even if I could tell that there was no significant change from the look of still form.
