Walking down the bustling street, I couldn't believe how quickly things could go wrong.
Just this morning I had been working in my office, and now here I was walking down the street feeling sorry for myself! After two years at the same job, they had let me go. Why, I couldn't answer. I had been doing well and actually thought I would be eligible for a promotion, instead they had let me go.I thought back to a few weeks ago when I had broken off my fling with the boss. Obviously, that was the reason behind my sudden termination! My blood boiled at the thought, but a part of me knew it was my own fault for getting involved with him.We had an on-and-off fling for the past year, and I had called it off when I found out he had lied to me about his divorce. He was still very much married, and I refused to knowingly be the "other woman".I walked into my favorite coffee shop and ordered a latte and a lunch bagel before taking a seat. I realized gloomily that I wouldn't be able to treat myself like this for a while now that I was out of a job.My pay had never been amazing, but I was able to come by. It was better than how I had grown up after all; poor and in an orphanage.I had spent my teenage life excelling at school to ensure I would have a shot at a better life, and the moment I left school I had been fighting every day to get to a point where I could live comfortably. But alas, the universe had other ideas.I sighed heavily and picked up my phone, browsing through the job classifieds on a site.I couldn't afford to wallow in self-pity, I needed to find another job.I applied for a few secretarial positions, and even though I hated the job, it was the area I had the most expertise in.If I had studied after school I would have been an art professor, but I had given up those dreams for now.Paying the bills and being able to feed me seemed far more important than dreams.I had just shoved a piece of bagel into my mouth when I heard my name called."Kenzie!" I recognized the voice immediately, even though it had been a few years since we had bumped into each other.I forced a smile as I turned to Caleb, my ex-boyfriend who had once been my high school sweetheart."Caleb! Hi! Fancy seeing you here.""Yeah? I'm back in town, helping my dad with one of the companies," he paused to wrap an arm around a beautiful Hispanic woman, "This is Selma, my fiancé.""Lovely to meet you!" I shook her hand, my eye noticing the large diamond rock on her finger, "How's your dad doing? He must be pleased that you're finally settling down?" Caleb came from money, lots of it. His father was a well-known businessman, and one of the most notorious billionaire players. He always had a different woman on his arm."He is, but Gramps is pretty pissed with him. Mind if we join you?""Not at all," I offered a smile to Selma. Caleb and I had been inseparable since we met at school, I had been fourteen and he was fifteen. We had dated from the ages of fifteen and sixteen to twenty and twenty-one.Although the breakup was painful, we had always remained on good terms. I knew we weren't meant for one another after that faithful night at my party. I shook my head to try and rid myself of the embarrassing memories."Why is your grandfather mad at your dad?" I asked casually."Haven't you seen the news? He totaled one of the cars with two hookers in it. The problem was the press caught wind of what they were doing to him in that car!"My eyes widened, apparently, Mr. Grimes really hadn't changed much. You see, he had always been charming and handsome. I had harbored a silly crush on him for a very long time. But I knew it was wrong and had never acted on it.Until the night Caleb's infidelities had come to light."Kenz? What's wrong?" Caleb asked.I shook my head, "Nothing. I'm just thinking how embarrassing that must have been!" "It was. but you know Dad, he doesn't care. Grandad is hoping to have Selma and I around and will get some positive improvements out of him.""Well, let's hope so." I took a sip of my latte."You should invite her to the gala," Selma spoke softly."Gala?" Oh please no, do not invite me to anything where your father will be!Caleb nodded, "Yes. Grimes Enterprises will be hosting a charity gala. Selma's right, you should come. I know you always loved charity work.""Oh, I'll, uh, check if I'm available. Job hunting has me a little swamped.""Come on, Kenz. Plus, there will be a lot of businessmen there, maybe you can even find a new job?"He had a point there, "I'll think about it." And I would. I just wasn't sure if it was such a good idea to see Mr. Grimes again. After what had happened I had successfully avoided him for years, was it time to bite the bullet and see him again?I looked down at my phone, thinking of the possible job opportunities I could get there, and made up my mind quickly."You know what? I'd love to join!""Great. I'll email you an official invitation."I nodded and we said our goodbyes before they left.I was already second-guessing my decision, but I also realized that this may just be the break I needed in life.I wasn't about to let anything stop me from getting it. Even a bit of embarrassment!Once I was done with my bagel, I took my latte and left, taking the subway home.I knew I didn't have anything that would really stand out at the gala, but I didn't have spare money to waste on dresses, so I'd have to make do with something in my closet.I decided I would put a simple black dress aside that looked more like sexy office attire than anything for a gala, but it was better than jeans, so it would have to do. I only owned three pairs of work heels, so I put the highest black heels aside with the dress. Happy that was taken care of I decided I would have a nap before getting back onto the internet to search for a job.I was hoping to get a job out of the gala, but I would still keep my options open in case that didn't work out.Upon waking up, I was greeted with an email from Caleb with an invitation to the charity gala.I stared at the pretty white and gold design for a few moments before shutting my laptop. I turned my back on it and chewed at my thumbnail, a terrible nervous habit I had always had since I was a young child.I wasn't sure I could do this. I didn't want to ask Caleb if his father would be there because I knew that would cause suspicion.Turning around again I opened the laptop and logged onto the internet, typing the gala into the search bar.I was happy to see the mention of big names who would be there. I was even happier to see that although Mr. Grimes had been the organizer, he was expected not to make an appearance, leaving Caleb to be the main spokesman.I smiled to myself, convinced that this was a sign sent from the universe to go to the gala.I quickly sent back an RSVP before shutting the laptop again. I warmed up a quick dinner and filled my cat's bowl of food for when he woke up and took a seat on the sofa in front of the television, watching a true crime documentary while I continued with my search for vacancies on the phone.I felt like things might just work out alright after all, which was a welcome feeling after the shit cards I had been dealt.I could get a well-paying job with one of the guests and while working for them I could finish my study in art, once that was done I could open a studio and offer classes to young artists.I was optimistic again for the first time in a long while.Maybe bumping into Caleb had been fate? I had always believed that life had a way of working itself out, and I was sure there would be some bigger reason behind the way things were currently going. It was just too slim of a chance to be a coincidence that I had seen Caleb and been invited to the gala.Life had a plan for me, and I was sure of it.I didn't have many friends growing up, and that hadn't changed much into adult life.My only real friend was Milly, a very loud woman I had met at a bar years ago. So I called her to help me get ready for the gala."You better take pictures. And snag me a hunk while you're there." She said while blowing her cigarette smoke out the window.I wrinkled my nose, "I'm going to try and find a job, not a man, Mills."She waved a hand, "Find me a rich husband and you won't need a job."I laughed at her, "I'll see you later. Make sure Toby stays inside."She nodded. I rushed downstairs to get my cab, nearly falling into the high heels I wore. It had been a while since I had worn heels so my poor ankles were in protest. As soon as I got into the cab and it began to move I realized this had been a bad idea. I was feeling queasy already.I stuck my head out the window hoping the wind in my face would stop me from throwing up all over the cab. I knew I wouldn't see Wyatt at the gala, but I still f
I was extremely excited to start my day, I had two interviews set up. I opened up my phone appointment app to go through the appointments I had lined up for the week. TODAY: Reagan Publishing House 9a.mFuture Incorporated 11a.mPrincess Pee Toy Empire 2p.m I sighed, although I was looking forward to the interviews, I was also a little worried. All three had been set up with guests from the gala, which meant they were all high-end.The first was for a PA position as the senior editor of the publishing house. The second was a secretarial position for a very well-known tech company. And the last was an incorporation that dealt with expensive toys. I also had more interviews set up for the following day, another two with two separate guests from the gala, both PA positions. And three had replied to my queries, a front desk receptionist for a family planning place, a call center agent, and last was an admin for a hot nightclub.I was feeling hopeful that I would find something, and fa
I heaved a sigh as yet another of my potential bosses called me to tell me that they would not be able to hire me.I just couldn't understand it. They had all been happy with me at the interviews. Why the sudden change now? It made no sense to me.I sighed, at least there was still the club, although I didn't want to work there, it was beginning to look like I had no other choice. The owner, Kevin, had asked me to come in tonight, which I found a little odd. The ad had stated I would be doing admin, so why would they want me to go in at night?Regardless of how I felt about it, I clearly didn't have any other choice left but to go in.I hurriedly got dressed before leaving to get there on time. And boy, was I surprised when I walked in.It was packed, which I had expected. What surprised me was the naked girls dancing on poles. And the naked girls walking around on stages. And the barely dressed waitresses. What the hell had I just walked into? Before I could turn around and make my g
×WYATT× Returning from my meeting, I sank down into my office chair, turning to stare out of the floor-to-ceiling windows that served as walls along one side of my office.I looked out over the city and found my mind wandering to Kenzie. I couldn't help but wonder why she hadn't come to see me about a job.I had made sure every potential job had turned her down.It was the only way to make sure she came to me.But it had been a week and still, there had been no sign of her.Did she hate me after what had happened years ago on her twenty-first birthday?I thought back to that night, the way her shirt and black dress had clung to every part of her body. The way her legs looked so long with those heels on her feet. But what stood out more was the feel of her soft skin against mine.I shook my head, Caleb was a fool for cheating on her. She was young and beautiful, she had a good heart. There was no reason to fuck it up.But, no, my son didn't fall very far from the tree it appeared, and
×WYATT× I was seated in the plush seat of the VIP room. My anger had me seething. How dare she do this? Why had she not come to me? I had offered her a job.The door opened and slammed shut as Kenzie stormed in."What the hell do you think you're doing?!" She snapped at me."Paying for a dance. That is your job now, isn't it?"Her eyes narrowed at me and I could see she was angry, she may have been quiet, but she had one hell of a temper when pushed."What are you doing here? Why did you pick me to come in here? To humiliate me?"I sighed, "I come in here often. What can I say, I wanted to test out the new goods." I was aware of the fact that I was being a jerk toward her. "You're doing this on purpose," She crossed her arms over her chest, I could see she was feeling awkward.I got to my feet and pushed her hands away, "What? Now you're shy? But you were just fine out there weren't you?!"She glared up at me, "Yes, I was because none of those people know me!""But I know all of you
×WYATT× I pulled the car to a stop in front of her apartment building and frowned. When she had given me her address a few moments after leaving the club, I immediately knew it was in a bad area. But I hadn't been expecting this."You live here?" I couldn't help but ask."Yes, Wyatt. Not all of us can live in expensive, fancy areas." She reached for the door, but I hit the central locking."This place doesn't look safe. Who is that?" I asked while looking in the direction of a man crouched over at the entrance.Kenzie shrugged like it was no big deal, "That's Paul, he's homeless.""He looks dangerous."She scoffed, "He isn't. Now, please unlock the door.""I'm walking you in," I got out of the car, ignoring her protests.Kenzie climbed from the car and glared at me before walking to the door."Hey, Paul, what are you doing? Why aren't you at the shelter?" Although moments before she had looked at me with anger, as she spoke to the elderly man at the door, her voice was soft and held c
×KENZIE× Wyatt had been shooting me looks throughout the day and I couldn't wait to get out of there."Why do you keep looking at me?" I asked suddenly. He got to his feet and walked over to me, there was something in the way that he looked at me that made me nervous."How do you know so much about the homeless shelters?"I blinked, that wasn't the question I had been expecting, "Um, because I've lived in them." I said it as if it should have been obvious."You've been homeless?" "Yes. Mr. Grimes, you know my past, it's no surprise that I've been in shelters after leaving Caleb."A mix of emotions crossed his face at my confession, "You've been homeless. Why didn't you come to me for help?"I couldn't believe what he was asking me, "If I'm done with the work for the day, I'll be leaving." I got to my feet, it was getting late and I had moved all of his appointments just as he had asked me to."Kenzie, I asked you a question.""Right. I should have come to my cheating ex-boyfriend's f
×WYATT×I twirled the scotch in my glass before bringing it to my lips and taking a hefty sip.My father was looking at me with a disapproving expression on his face, not that it was anything new. He was always looking at me like that. But I supposed for a man in his mid-eighties, I couldn't really expect much more.Normally, I didn't give a shit about what he thought, but tonight was different.Tonight we had dinner with Caleb and Selma.Caleb joined us in the study with Selma and I just knew I had to be very careful with this conversation. Not only would it be uncomfortable for poor Selma, but Kenzie would hate me if I let anything about our secret come out and I didn't want that to happen."So, you hired Kenzie Middleton as a personal assistant. When you have Hilda." My father's tone was clear, he thought I wanted to take her to bed.If only he knew."Yes, I did. How I run the company is up to me."My father placed his drink on the table beside him, "Wyatt, son, I love you. But thi
