Charlie's POV
"Thank you for meeting me, Char."
"Of course, David."
"Come. Stand by me, please."
I walked over to his side, my whole body shaking with nerves. The wind bellowed out my thin T-shirt as my converse pounded into the dirt foundation of the spot where we always set up camp.
Memories assaulted me from all directions, late nights sitting around the fire. Laughing and telling jokes, staying up late talking with David after everyone else went to bed.
God, how long have I actually been in love with him?
I thought I was just nervous around him because he was Alex's best friend and cousin. I wanted David and Jill to like me...
Now I'm not so sure, thinking back about all the time we spent together I start to realize I've been in love with him a lot longer than I thought.
More memories flooded through my mind of our time together. Ho
David's POV Those ten words shook my from my calm like trance. Clenching and unclenching my jaw I try to calm down before answering her. "I don't know." I said."Why not?" She asked. Like I needed a reason to not look at her face right now, but it just makes me so angry when I see her. "Honestly?" "Of course." She whispered. "It makes me angry to look at you right now Charlotte. To think about what you took from me. I know I had no right to yell at you the way I did while we were at your parents house, but I don't take back what I said. I also don't regret it. You took a very important decision away from me Char. And I've missed out on six solid impoortant years of my sons life because of that. Because of you." I said. The sob that sounded from her mouth almost broke my resolve, almost. "I really am sorry David. I thought I was doing the
David's POV"When I was about 12 my biological parents told me we were moving, that we needed a fresh start to be a good family again."Hold on. Did she just say her biological parents? What the fuck?"Yes, I said my biological parents. Dean and Lisa aren't my actual parents, but they've taken care of me better than I could of hoped for and they've always been there for me."Why wouldn't she tell me any of this? Did Alex know?"You see they weren't very good people. My biological father, Joe, beat me. Molested me, left scars all over my body. When I told my mother, Laura, she said that it was my fault. Said that I tempted him. That I wanted to take her husband from her. After that she put in a dead bolt on my door. Where she could lock it from the outside."Jesus Christ."She wouldn't let me out of my room unless my father wasn't home or I needed to go to school, and when he lost his job I was never let out. A
Charlie's POVWalking away from David at the lake was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. I laid awake all night going over everything that happened. The expressions crossing his face as I laid out my whole sordid life in front of him. Explained why I felt the need to leave, why I always ran. And then I left, to let him process everything. To give him a chance at figuring out what he wanted to do.Four days passed before he showed up at the front door, asking me to come outside. To talk.If I thought I was nervous last time, it couldn't compare to what I felt now. Everything was out in the open and if David decided he just wanted a relationship with his son and not me I had to respect that."I believe you Char, I do. I know that you thought leaving was the best decision at the time. But that doesn't stop it from hurting."I couldn't look at him, I didn't want him to see the tears wells up in my eyes. I c
David's POV "Hey Char, I was calling about taking Killian to lunch. Is he busy today?" "Today?" "Yes, it's been a slow day for me here. Finished all my paperwork on permits for the new houses and I figured I could take him out to lunch. You know, talk with him and get to know him." "Uhm, okay. Yeah, he's free for lunch. He's a little picky when it comes to food but let me ask him where he wants to go." She said. "Oh, well I figured we could just drive around and he could pick us out a place to eat. You know, make it our place to go together." "Oh, uh, okay. Yeah. Sure." She muttered. "Char?" "Yeah?" "Its just lunch." "No I know I'm sorry. It's just weird to share him with someone else. She said with a laugh. "Hold on, let me get him for you. Killian!" "Whaaaaaaaaaaat mommmmm, I'm playing with grandpa!" "Oh this little boy- Come here please." I chuckled and closed my eyes a
David's POV "I'm not sure what to call him," I heard Killian whisper. "Do I call him David or dad?""Honey. You can call him whatever you're comfortable with, alright?" Char whispered back. Killian looked up over his moms shoulder and released her. She turned and watched him approach me. Stopping right in front of me, he held out his little handle to shake mine. I crouched down and smiled, taking his hand in mine to shake it. "Hi, mom said that we were gonna hang out and eat lunch together? So where are we going? Are you hungry?" He asked. "I am. Are you? If not we don't have to go out and eat, we can go to the park, or even just stay here and talk. As for where we're going we can get whatever you want. I was gonna let you pick." "Okay, yeah. I'm hungry, can we get pizza?" I heard Charlie giggling behind him as my smile grew ten times bigger on my face. "Pizza it is little guy, I know the perfect plac
David's POVThats when it hit me.This is what she's felt like every day for the last six years looking into his face and seeing me."So mommy said that you own a company that builds houses?" He asked."I sure do, I've always liked building things with my hands." I said, chuckling."I like knowing how things work, how to build them. Mom lets me help with her bird houses that she puts together and paints sometimes.""She's still making those bird houses huh? When I first met your mom she had them hanging on almost every tree outside her house.""She doesn't make them much anymore, we don't have a lot of places to put them at home. But maybe she'll start again since we're moving back here?""Yeah. Maybe she will." I stated When I asked him if he was excited about moving here, his eyes lit up. Describing all of the things he couldn't wait to do, Charlie's had been telling him all the fun stuff she's
When we pulled up in front of the curb to the house Killian raced out of the car. Up the driveway right into Charlie's waiting arms. She scooped him up, twirling him around in her arms while I slipped my hands in my pockets.Watching them interact with the new information I had.Had she really been crying for me that night?"Thanks for letting me take him out for a little while today." I said once Killian climbed down out of her arms."Killian, baby. Head inside so I can talk to daddy for just a second. Okay?" She said.Fuck.That's always great. My eyes met hers before they scanned down her body.I want to fix things with her, I wanna make things right between us.So we could be a family like Killian wanted. But it still hurt.I still hurt, all of it still hurt.
Deciding to run errands and get my parents groceries while Killian and david were out to lunch seemed like the best way to keep me preoccupied, that is until I ran into Jill at the supermarket. I couldn't very well ignore her, but how much does she actually know? I'm pretty sure she and Alex were still friends and I'm sure he's blabbed to half of the town by now. Fuck. Thinking she wouldn't see me and I could just avoid her was a pipe dream, why would my luck start today? "Char? I-I thought you moved. What are you doing here? She asked. "Oh, yeah. I did move. To California, but we're moving back here to spend more time with my parents." "We?" Oh cock suck, mother of fuck. "Yes, we. I have a six year old son named Killian." Please don't throat punch me, ple- "Huh. Guess David really wasn't careful when you guys slept together." She said with a smug look on her fac
