Chapter thirty-nine

Charlie's POV

Walking away from David at the lake was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. I laid awake all night going over everything that happened. The expressions crossing his face as I laid out my whole sordid life in front of him. Explained why I felt the need to leave, why I always ran. And then I left, to let him process everything. To give him a chance at figuring out what he wanted to do. 

Four days passed before he showed up at the front door, asking me to come outside. To talk. 

If I thought I was nervous last time, it couldn't compare to what I felt now. Everything was out in the open and if David decided he just wanted a relationship with his son and not me I had to respect that. 

"I believe you Char, I do. I know that you thought leaving was the best decision at the time. But that doesn't stop it from hurting."
