Heartbreak 2

After that scenario, I couldn't think straight as the picture of them together and also how Dave and I were in the past kept popping into my head making me see the truth. Dave kept looking at her so lovingly and affectionately, a side that I haven't experienced before.

"It's for the best." I stated, cleaning a stray tear from my cheeks before entering the elevator with my head bowed.

Sadly, I wasn't strong enough to keep my emotions in check and I began to tear up.

"Are you okay?" a deep and husky voice said behind me thereby making me jump as I thought I was alone.

"Yeah." I sniffed, bringing my hand to my face to wipe the tears from my cheeks when I saw a hand holding a handkerchief towards me.

"Thanks." Collecting it, I cleaned my tears and when I turned back to return the handkerchief my breath was caught in my throat, I was speechless. He was the guy from the other day, who had dressed in black, and surprisingly he was still dressed in the same manner just that today he wore a hoodie with a cap underneath and a nose mask. I felt a cold chill run down my spine, seeing him again and not only seeing him like this but also giving me his handkerchief.

"I'm sorry." I said handing back his handkerchief before swiftly turning away from him.

With that, we stayed in an uncomfortable silence and the only thing that was heard was the fast beating of my heart against my ribcage, which I feared he also heard.

Immediately the elevator opened, just like the last time I left hurriedly.

"Hey!" I heard him calling me but I didn't respond. I was almost at my door when I felt someone grab my arm.

"What?" I shouted flinging my arm away from him but I couldn't get his reaction because of the cap that covered his face but through the slight movement of his nose mask , I knew he was surprised.

"Your purse." he showed me my purse. "It fell when... you left the elevator," he said and I felt my cheeks heat in embarrassment.

"Thanks," I said collecting the purse. I was about to go to my room when I remembered. "I'm sorry for snapping at you."

"No prob. Just take care next time," he said and I saw that his lips formed into a smile.

Smiling back, I went towards the door of my apartment but before I entered I felt his gaze following every of my movement.

UNKNOWN POV.

Looking at her made me smile, she looked cute even when she was flustered.

Sighing I entered my new apartment. It's been twice I've seen her and it makes me happy to see her physically instead of looking at the pictures of her. My heart broke when I saw her cry in the elevator but I couldn't do much. I also noticed how lean and tired her figure was.

Unconsciously, I brought the handkerchief too. my nose and her scent filled the air. Memories of her came to my mind and how I was close to having her before she left.

"Diane, I'm back." I muttered before I drowned myself in the memories.

CHARLOTTE POV.

"Diane, stay with me forever," he whispered into my ear, making goosebumps hover on my flesh.

"No, I can't," I said dejectedly, looking into his hazel eyes. "You know that I'll still........." he cut me off by placing his finger on my lips.

"Just give me a chance," he said solemnly. "But I won't try to rush you, I'll wait till you can give me your whole heart." he said before pecking my cheeks.

***************************************

Waking up, I felt stuck unable to move as I kept reminiscing about that day.

*Sigh.*

I tried standing up from the bed but was hit with a headache that threatened to split my head in half and the swaying off the ceiling of my room wasn't helping.

I turned on my bed feeling nauseous. I had planned on going to the hospital today to get myself treated but I couldn't even lift myself from the bed.

After some minutes of turning and tossing, I found the strength to get up from the bed and went to the bathroom to get ready to go to the hospital.

It took me a long time before I finally finished and made my way out.

Dragging myself out of the building, I took a taxi to the nearby hospital.

"Ms. Miles, how're you doing?" a sweet and calm voice said behind me soothing me.

"Bad, Dr. Xender," I said as I turned to face him.

"Wow!" he exclaimed as he shook his head.

"I know but how bad do I look?"

"Very bad. Let's get on inside and run some tests on you." he said holding my hand.

"But promise me no injections," I said weakly, holding back.

"I can't promise you that."

"Why?"

"Because......I don't know what's wrong with you so I can't promise that" he explained.

"No," I said shaking my head negatively but I regretted it immediately as my head felt like it was about to burst open anytime soon and I groaned.

"Char, you aren't feeling well let's get inside." he started for the hospital door.

"No, Xender leave me alone. I'm not going in there." I kept pleading as he dragged me and I could care less if anyone saw me.

"Xender you....."

He stopped abruptly and faced me. His expression alone was enough to shut me up.

"Charlotte Miles, do you want me to force you to take the tests?" he threatened and I immediately shook my head.

"I'll do the tests," I said at last as I shifted on my foot, now regretting why I came to the hospital where he worked.

Defeated, I looked down and allowed him to drag me into the lab.

After what seemed like hours, I finally was through with the tests and was now sitting in front of a smirking Xender.

Xender was a senior while we were in high school. He had often found fun teasing me but treated me like I was his younger sister. But one day at school, I realized that he hadn't been in school from the beginning of that week. I got worried and I asked his friends who told me that he had left the country to continue his studies abroad. I had been furious because he hadn't mentioned anything about leaving.

When I finished college, I came across him when I was I was trying to look for a job and by then he was already a doctor.

"Would you wipe that smirk from your face and tell me what is wrong with me."

"You tend to overreact." he said and chuckled.

"What? Overreact? What does that mean? I'm I that sick? Is it that bad?" I asked, growing anxious but he chuckled while I looked at him like two heads had grown in addition to his single head.

"You only have a minute fever and if it is well treated you'll be good by the end of the week." he sneered.

"Are you sure that it is a minute fever and not something else? Hope you aren't joking with me?" I looked at him suspiciously.

"Charlotte Miles, you are alright.....well apart from the fever which you'll be fine very soon if you take your medications as it is prescribed without skipping even a dose." he smirked before handing me the reports with the prescription.

Collecting the prescription, I shuddered as I read the prescription and I heard him stifle a laugh.

"Laugh all you want." I smiled sarcastically as I stood up to leave.

"Make sure to eat and rest well," he advised.

"Yes, Dad." I smiled before leaving his office.

While waiting for the online cab, a figure caught my attention. Though it was his back view, I could still recognize him even when there were thousands of backs turned at me, I would still pick his out.

"But what is he doing here?" I asked myself as I began my way in his direction.

"Char!" I heard Xender call from behind me and I unwillingly tore my gaze away from the back view to Xender who stood at the entrance of the hospital.

"What?" I asked when he was in front of me.

"I was thinking if you can....." he paused when I began shaking my head negatively.

"I can't."

"Why? You didn't even let me speak."

"Because I know what you're going to say." I paused. "You have to know it can never work out for us. Let's just stay as friends. Only if you want me to avoid you forever."

"Just a chance." he pleaded.

I was about to speak when I heard a horn behind me.

"Did you order a ride?" a chubby man behind the wheel asked and I nodded before facing Xender.

"I'm sorry but I can't. Take care." I said before I entered my ride, leaving him standing on the spot.

Xender has confessed his love for me time and time again but I couldn't get myself to reciprocate that love for him. He was a good guy, every woman's dream but wasn't my dream guy. He has taken me on different dates so he could keep reminding me how he loves me and blah-blah-blah.

Unconsciously my mind wandered to the back view and I couldn't help but think more of him. If not for Xender, I would have walked up to him.

"If I even went to him what was I going to say?" I thought aloud and sighed.

Due to these thoughts, the ride home seemed faster than usual.

At night when I tried sleeping, the thoughts kept me awake and I ended up in the living room, watching a soap but I couldn't concentrate on what I was watching as his face kept popping into my head.

Suddenly, I heard the strings of a guitar coming from the other room and it did no good as the memories surfaced in my thoughts thereby making me have no control over my thoughts.

UNKNOWN POV.

I couldn't get a wink all night, as I couldn't get my mind off her. To my side was the guitar and I remembered how I got some sleep the other day after playing so I picked it up to give it a try.

Thinking about a song I could play, I couldn't think of another one apart from the one I sang for her at a time when she was still with me.

Closing my eyes, I let my heart and my hand take control. Just like the other day, at every sound of the string, my mind began to open and the days we spent and the fun we had together came rushing like a strong current.

CHARLOTTE POV.

"Tyler, stay."

This was the first thing I heard and I opened my eyes to see another movie showing on the screen of my TV and I closed my eyes back.

Moments later, I sighed and opened my eyes before raising from the couch into a sitting position. Raising my eyes to the wall clock right above my TV. It was noon, well this was what happens when sleep decides to elude you when you are damn stressed.

Since I wasn't going anywhere today, I didn't take my bath as I went straight to the kitchen to fix myself something to eat. When the food was done I marched back to the couch and began scrolling through the channels until I came across a romance movie.

I was almost halfway through the movie when my phone rang. Without checking who it was I picked up.

"Babe!!!!!" an excited shrilling voice came in immediately.

"Diane?" I asked when I had looked at the caller's ID and saw an international number.

"Yeah, it's me." she replied and I could hear the happiness in her tone.

"Wow, it's truly you," I said sitting up. "Why haven't you called me since you got there? Or you forgot about me immediately ?"

"It's not like that. It has been surprisingly stressful settling here, you know but it's still not an excuse for me not calling you." she pleaded.

"Well, it doesn't matter anymore," I said, pushing the discussion aside. "So tell me."

"What?"

"After all this while, you didn't call and out of the blue, you decided that it's the best time to give me a call, when you know I could be at work. Girl, I've seen this happen before so spit it out."

"No, don't misunderstand me, Charlotte. I simply called to know how my girlfriend is doing."

"You called me Charlotte, which is so abnormal for you. Speak, Diane." I sternly said.

"That's why I've missed you. You're the only one who truly knows me. Awn, I'm touched."

"Would you wipe that grin from your face and tell me." I said and I heard her chuckle. "Since you're not speaking, I guess I'll have to cut the call now." I threatened.

"Okay!" she gave up immediately and a smile crept up my lips.

"And no suspense."

"Okay, but aren't you busy? You know attending to customers and sorts." she tried to evade the discussion.

"No, I'm at home."

"At home? you were sacked?" she sounded horrified.

"No!" I answered sharply. "How can I be sacked? I was given a week's leave off work."

"Why? Is something wrong?" her tone sounding worried.

"Nothing much, I came down with a fever so I'm staying at home to recuperate."

"What?" she screamed.

"Yeah." I chuckled dryly.

"You've fine to the hospital?"

"Yeah." I smiled.

"Who forced you?"

"No one."

"Yeah?"

"Okay, Alex did but I refused not until it weakened me yesterday. And Xender...... Oh My Gosh, I'm sure he enjoyed taunting me." I said and she laughed.

"You know....."

I cut her off sternly. "Don't start, Diane."

Unwilling to give up she continued. "He can be the perfect distraction you know."

"And I'll keep telling you that I have nothing for that guy."

"You could give it a try before deciding...

"End of discussion, Diane."

"If you say so."

I heaved a sigh before speaking. "So what up?" I drawled.

"Nevermind," she said dismissively.

"Nevermind? You must be joking with me." I laughed dryly showing my seriousness. "Girl would you talk or do you want me to call Xavier and ask for the explicit details." I threatened.

"Xavier?"

"Yeah, Xavier, or do you want to tell me that you haven't talked with him yet." I rolled my eyes.

"How did you know?" she asked surprised.

"Girl, if you had tried to reach me earlier you would know that I know more than you know. So......would you tell me or I should go ahead with plan b. I just wanna know if he finally confessed to you. I just wanna know what you guys spoke about and if you're still in the friend zone or if you guys upgraded already?" I heard her chuckle.

"Well sweetheart, he just called me after how many years and you want me to talk about my feelings to him? Sis, you gotta calm down."

"No, don't tell me you guys are still adamant about keeping your feelings to yourself?" I asked.

"It's just too early to confess when we only spoke once ever since he traveled so don't get overanxious."

"Diane, are you serious here? Till when are you gonna keep your feelings bottled up? If you think it's too early since he just called you, from my perspective I think it's getting too late. Why couldn't you tell him about it before he traveled?" I inquired. "Oh, I remember, you were waiting for him to speak as the gentleman that he is," I said sarcastically. "Only God knows if he hasn't fallen for someone else, at least he's human. So, girl, you got to speak up before it gets too late."

"Is that a advice or threat? cause I can feel the danger from here."

"Take it as a threat, cause time is running out."

"Yes, mum." She chuckled and we both burst into laughter. "I've missed you so much. Residents here are sadists except for an old lady from the opposite block and her family."

"An angry old woman with cats?" I stifled laughter.

"No, this she's different. She is very nice and caring, she doesn't even look old."

"Woah, this is a first. For Diane, an oldies lover." I stated jokingly.

"No, I'm serious this time, I'm an oldie lover. And if you meet her grandchildren OMG they are cuties."

"Wow, you truly are into them."

"Who won't? One of th........."

And like that, we talked like there was no tomorrow.
