My mother’s eyes narrowed, the flicker of a challenge sparking in their depths. She took another slow drag of her cigarette, her lips curling into a slight smirk. “I’d expect nothing less from my son.”

I turned away from her, my heart heavy with the weight of my decision. Jenna’s safety came first, even if it meant diving back into the life I despised.
