Chapter 35 – Richard’s Explanation

“Do you mind if I get something to eat?” Richard asks, coming out of the guest room as Emmett and Simone were just about to sit down for dinner.

Nodding her head; “Did Paul hit you again?” Simone asks, putting some roast beef and vegetables on her plate; topping the whole plate with gravy.

“He never stopped” Richard says; eyeing how much gravy she was putting on top. “Do you have enough? Or would you like me to get you a pitcher?”

“I’m fine” she answers. ‘It’s not me who wants the gravy; it’s the jelly bean in my stomach that does’ she adds to herself. Emmett’s eyes narrow to a cold stare. Not because Richard was teasing Simone. He wasn’t aware Richard was beaten by Paul.

“Why did you come here, of all places?” Emmett asks, not sure of what he is doing or why he would go to him in the first place. “You hate me as much as Paul.”

“I don’t hate you. You are my brother” Richard says; shock creeping on Emmett’s face. “I already told you; I don’t have anywhere else to go.”
