Chapter 40 - Desperation

"You've been awfully quiet as of late." Gavin mused, swishing around the whiskey in his glass, the ice rattling against the glass walls of the cup.

Today was one of the very few days a year where Panic room was dead. It was month end, and with it came the annoying and prodding that was my brother. The others had gone back to their homes a little while ago, but it was a sort of tradition for Gavin and me to hang back and torment each other. Usually, I enjoyed it, but not now, not when I had to ensure my brother didn't catch wind of what I had planned for him and the others.

Gavin was always sticking his nose in my business, trying to rile me up with snide comments and backhanded compliments, and I would torment and goad him in my own ways. But he had a way of sniffing out secrets, and with a secret as big as mine, I didn't need him ruining my chances of taking the throne out from under all my brothers.

I scoffed, tossing back my drink. The amber liqui
