The second my mother asked that question, I saw Naomi stiffen beside me, and her breathing became laboured as Violet's eyes met hers.

I didn't like having to make decisions like this, but my choice was clear. If Violet was to say the truth, it was going to destroy Naomi's confidence, and she's been doing well so far.

I stepped in between Violet and my mum before she could reply and said, "Oh no, it's my fault really. It was an on field injury. "

Mother rose a brow as I explained, not buying into my story, "Hm? So how did it happen? And why don't you allow Violet to speak for herself?"

I placed a hand on Violet's shoulder, giving it a little squeeze. "Don't mind me, mother. I feel guilty, that's all. Violet, tell mum how those thorns dug into your arm when you followed me to investigate close to the border."
