Chapter 28

Devon’s POV:

That night, it was pouring. The rain pelting over my skin. I stood over our mother’s grave, completely unmoving. We had finished her funeral a few hours ago, but I can’t take it upon myself to just leave.

Are we just going to leave her here?

On the outside, I see two straight tree branches, cut neatly to form a cross. I had tied a rope around it to help it stay in place.

Looking down at the soil where my mother lay, I let a smile break on my lips.

“Forgive me, mother. I tried.” I smiled bitterly.

Father didn’t even care to give her a proper burial. He took one look at her corpse as I knelt beside her, holding her hand.

Tears had sprung from my eyes, and I looked up, gauging my father’s reaction at her evident death.

Only to see him turn his head away and say, “Stop touching that. You’ll cover yourself with filth.” Disgust filled his eyes.

Anger bubbled through my veins but my feet were rooted in place. I cannot move a single muscle as I simply watched him turn on his heel
