The words hung in the air like a surreal echo, and I stared at Max, trying to gauge his expression for any sign of a jest. A faint smile tugged at his lips, and for a split second, I thought he was kidding. My heart raced with a mixture of amusement and confusion, my mind grappling to comprehend the weight of what he had just said.

"You're joking, right?" I blurted out, a nervous laugh bubbling up. The mere thought of being pregnant was so far from my reality that I couldn't help but assume it was a playful tease, a way to catch me off guard.
