I woke up later, my head still on Tanner's shoulder. I swiveled my head to see him holding Jaimie. My son was smiling up at the man.

"I had to take him or he would have fallen from your hand while you slept." He said to me without taking his eyes away from the baby.

I thanked him most fervently but he shrugged it off, as usual, his face expressionless.

Typical him. Always hiding in the cloak of keeping to himself. Addicted to emitting only a few sentences only when he felt he needed to talk.

I find myself learning to cope with that. After being married to a man like Dale, I learned to survive anything and adapt to any environment.

He's always strangely there for my baby and me. Always at the nick of time whenever I needed help desperately.

I've never felt so safe with anyone. But this filthy-looking drunkard gave me a new leap of hope.

Ironically, he gave me almost all of it. Contradicting his never evading and off-drunken natur
