Chapter 56

“Candice! Candice!” I called out to her and hastened my footsteps to meet her but she didn't stop walking.

“Candice!” I tapped her shoulder when I finally got to her and she whipped her head quickly and for a second, fear flashed through her eyes.

“It's just me,” I said softly, raising my hands slightly in the air.

She heaved a sigh and placed a hand on her chest, probably to calm her heartbeat.

“You scared me,” she said, her breaths coming out ragged and forced.

“Sorry, I didn't mean to startle you,” I apologized even though I was confused as to why she would be sacred in the house. “ It's just I had been calling your name and you didn't respond,” I added.

“I…I didn't hear,” she said vaguely.

“What are you thinking about?” I asked.

“Stuff,” she shrugged.

I noticed something on the side of her eye and I cocked my head to the side to get a better look at it.

She traced my line of sight and quickly brought her head down and her bangs covered her eyes.

But my curiosity got the best of me
