Chapter Sixty-Nine: Wasn't He?

Dead...died, as in I died again? As in, I prevented nothing?

As in, I basically went back in time and played house with the same man who abandoned me?

A smile that tastes numb crosses my face.

"Did you not hear my question, Ruby?"

My gaze travels slowly to the man at the door; he looks different from the one who had been in my bed a few nights ago. It is the birthday that changed him, isn’t it? My nod is slow; I am not accepting anything, but I cannot stop my neck from tilting up and down.

The ringing in my ears does not permit concrete thoughts to form in my mind. For the first time in my life, the clarity of not being able to change anything feels palpable.

"And...how accurate are your premo-"

"They have never failed."

The queen answers before I pose my question.

"Are you ignoring me?"

The Alpha asks with an irritated sigh when I still do not respond to him; the numbness in my chest minimises the impact of his burst into the room dripping in animosity.
