Face to face

Clara ran upstairs. She was a little scared to see the rooms in front of her. She didn’t know where the noise was coming from, so she had to ask.

“Is anybody here? I heard a noise, so I ventured up here. I wonder if I can help anything in here?”

No one answered Clara. She was still scared, but she moved forward. Clara couldn’t leave because she thought she had made it up here. She was afraid someone was in danger and she couldn’t help herself.

After walking for a while, when she neared the end of the corridor, Clara saw that the door of a room was open. She ran inside to check out what was wrong. When she went inside, Clara heard running water, the sound of falling objects, and the very soft voice of someone talking. Clara couldn’t hear what the other person was saying. She could only hear a man talking to someone about bringing a car here to pick up things. Clara is pretty sure there is a thief in this house. The person who is talking tells someone to bring a car, bring a car for what? Isn’t it implied to bring a car to carry the stolen stuff?

She thought back to how the house keys had been left under the flowerpot, where anyone could find them. If the thieves found the key and entered the house and then locked the door from the inside, Clara wouldn’t be surprised. When she asked earlier, no one answered. Was it because she alerted the thieves that they had dropped the items?

The more Clara thought about it, the more certain she became of her theory. She looked around the room and saw a corner, so she rushed over to pick it up. Then Clara approached the room where the noise was coming from, slowly and carefully.

Clara did not expect that on the first day of work, she encountered a bad thing, but once she got involved, she had to think of a way to solve it. After all, she also knows a few martial arts. She won’t get beaten if she encounters bandits for a while. Clara didn’t like to meddle in other people’s business, but this time, it was different. She didn’t want her landlord to lose everything on the first day.

Clara took her phone out of her bag and called the police when she entered the room. Before opening the door, she took a deep breath to gather her courage, then raised her foot and kicked the door open.

“I’ve already called the police. The police will arrest you if you don’t leave.”

Clara raised her baseball bat in one hand, the other hand gripped the phone, and was about to press the button to call the number dialed earlier. She had already prepared everything. As long as the robbers acted, she would call the police. And the baseball bat is for her to protect herself, but... something seems to be wrong. Clara calmed down and could see things. She had just entered the bathroom. And there weren’t any bandits, just… a man covered in a towel sitting on the edge of the tub.

What’s going on? Clara is not understanding what happened. What did she do just now? Looks like she just kicked someone’s bathroom door while the person was taking a shower. If you look at him, if he’s wet like that, he must take a shower. Clara acted stupidly because she thought there was a thief in the room.

She stood still and stared at the man sitting on the edge of the tub.

The man looked at Clara. But in contrast to her shocked expression, he appeared much calmer. He was also the one who spoke up to break the strange silence between the two of them.

 “Who are you?”

The man asked. He wasn’t looking at Clara anymore, he was still sitting in the same place. Right now, he was planning to do something with the towel wrapped around his body. Clara saw him unbutton his towel, then stand up, and then the whole tower fell to the ground.

 “Ah…”

Clara turned away when she screamed. He... he took off his towel right in front of her. He took off his towel despite knowing she was there. What does this act of his mean?

Her face turned red when she thought about what she saw. It’s not that she wanted to see. When he removed the towel, she turned around. She could see what appeared in front of her. Now she was trying to forget everything she had just seen, or else she would have to haunt it forever.

“Who are you?” The man asked again.

“So who are you?” Clara did not answer him but asked in return.

After hearing Clara’s question, the man laughed before answering.

“I am Edward James, the owner of this mansion. I ask again, who are you and what are you doing in my house?”

“Are you Mr. Edward James?” Clara was shocked and asked again. She didn’t realize the man was nearly nude. She remembered and turned away when she saw the towel.

 “That’s right, I’m Edward James.”

“You’re the owner of the mansion?” Clara asked.

“Yes.” Edward James replied. He was still quite calm when answering all of Clara’s questions.

Damned. Clara cursed under her breath. She did not expect that she would be this unlucky. It was foolish to burst into the owner’s bathroom and now face him. She is done. The job with the dream salary is done. If he knew she was the new maid he would have fired her.

“I am Clara Blair. I’m... the new maid introduced by Mrs. Smith. It’s the first time we met, and I made such a myth. I’m sorry.” Clara answered Edward’s question with honesty. He will fire her. This thought of hers will almost certainly come true if Edward James knows her identity. Now that he knew, her dream job would end here.
