Chp 16 Pt. 6 The White Witch

The next day one of the first things we do is exhume Akila’s mother and burn her remains. Akila says some incantations while her body burns and appears to be praying. We all watch, fascinated by this ritual. Mason takes Akila by the hand once it appears she is done praying and she allows him to embrace her. I can see Mason is whispering to her and I am sure he is telling her in more detail the day her mother died. A stray tear falls and she quickly wipes it away.

We head back into the dining room for some of Sally’s blackberry cobbler and coffee. Akila seems to be taking her mother’s death better than I expected.

“Akila, are you okay?”

“I’m fine Haley. Death is a part of life. We don’t mourn it, we celebrate it. I’m just sad I wasn’t here when she died. I’m glad you kept your promise to her though,” she says while nudging against Mason. He smiles and kisses her forehead. I can tell they’ve been bonding lately.
