Chapter 28: Butters (Audra)

My palms are sweaty as I walk through the hallways of the business office wing of the hospital. Part of me wanted to turn around and forget what I was doing, while the other part urges me to keep going because I need this.

I lightly knock on the door of the Human Resources supervisor’s office.

“Good morning, Audra! What can I help you with?” Nikki asks as she pushes her dark framed glasses up her nose.

“I’m here to hand in my letter of resignation. It is effective immediately.”

She takes it from my hand with disbelief written across her face. “I don’t understand? I mean, I do, but why?” She stumbles over her words as she tries to process if I’m joking or not.

“I have recently come to terms with the fact that as much as I do love babies and love being a nurse, I can no longer continue working in pediatrics for the sake of my own mental well being. I treasure the friendships I have developed here with my colleagues over the last 2 years and I will never forget you all.”
