The Best Part

"She's awake now." Doctor Gilbert said as her hand rested on my shoulder. "I'll take you to her." She said so I followed her.

"How long does she have?" I asked and the doctor briefly closed her eyes.

"Any day now. It's a miracle that she's still alive at this point." She said softly.

"I thought she had longer." I said in confusion.

"She hides her pain very well. The cancer has spread to almost every organ in her body." The doctor explained. "I don't think she'll make it through the night."

Everything stopped around me and I could hear myself breathing. My eyes was wide in shock and a tear slipped from my eye. This can't be it.

"Can I see her?" I asked and the doctor nodded.

I opened the door and spotted Joan's tiny body curled up under a blanket. I went to sit next to her and she painfully turned her head to watch me.

"Thank you for last night." She said softly.

"I got you something." She said with a smile on her face. "I left it in your top drawer." She said weakly.
