Chapter 36 - Waking up

Avery POV

“You’re going to be okay”, I hear a voice in the background, but I am too tired to move or respond.

I open my eyes and stretch, feeling the soft blanket on top of my body. I take a deep breath, and I am hit by the most amazing smell ever, Matteo’s smell, the smell of whiskey mixed with aftershave and danger. I open my eyes slowly, adjusting to the light and seeing him sitting next to the bed. His eyes are closed, his beard is bigger than usual, and he looks exhausted. He seems like he has aged a few years. What the hell is going on?

I move in the bed, and I sit, and as soon as my eyes meet his, they are now opened, looking at me as if it was the first time he was seeing me. His eyes are filled with emotions, and I have never seen them like that. He moves closer to the bed, taking a deep breath and offering me a smile.
