Chapter 3: First Day At The Job

It was just before dawn at around five in the morning and Hailey was already up from bed, it seemed too early on a normal day but she had to beat the morning traffic to meet up with work.

Manhattan was known for its long-lasting traffic jams, that could last for hours so waking up in the early hours of the morning would become the new black for Hailey who had now moved here almost permanently.

It was her first day of work and You know what they say, the first impression always matters so she had to be on her best attitude.

Hailey had just come out of the shower, as a lover of music she was singing along to the Ed Sheeran shape of you song playing over the music box just on her bed, she reached for her makeup kit inside her bag, she proceeded to sit on the soft wobbly water bed which was like a trademark of the Stewart hotels.

Since Hailey did not have any family members with that she could stay in Manhattan, she decide to lodge in a hotel until she would get her apartment.

She checked out downstairs at the reception just before she left the hotel, “oh! I forgot to have breakfast” Hailey exclaimed.

She walked down the road, a few blocks from her hotel to the subway. Where she got a train that was going downtown where her company was located.

She was happy that she got the job and at the same time she was so nervous because it was her first day of work, that she forgot to have breakfast.

When she got to her new workplace, she was even more nervous so she paused for a while, looking at the glass-covered building that towered into the sky. It was so tall and it looked like it had no end. It was taller than what she had ever seen before , coming from Philadelphia where skyscrapers were not very common.

She took a deep breath just to calm her nerves. Just before she stepped into the building and just as she took a few steps into the building, she experienced the same sensation that she had felt back on the plane when she met Gabriel.

“Hailey is that you?”, she heard a deep voice calling out to her softly from a little distance away.

she turned to find out in complete disbelief,

“Gabriel !, what are you doing here?” Surprised, Hailey asked him.

it was the hunk of a guy she met on the flight the previous day. He was coincidentally the manager of her new company. She was relieved to find out that she already knew someone who worked here, at least he would help her acclimatize to her new workplace.

He introduced Hailey as the new secretary of the company and showed her around, he took her and showed her to the office which she was to occupy on the fifth floor and helped her arrange her stuff.

As they discussed, she was curious as to why he didn’t tell her previously, that he was the Chief Executive Officer of such a big banking firm.

“I feel like it is a show-off when I go around telling people what I do. Moreover, It was not important at that time,”  he replied to her.

She was surprised to hear that her new friend Gabriel Christianson was actually a billionaire but yet was a humble guy.

“So what is your excuse now for not calling me yesterday as we had agreed,”  Hailey asked again.

but he told her that he had a serious meeting with the board of directors after which he was so tired to do anything.

“coffee?” Gabriel asked Hailey as he walks over to the coffeemaker by the side of her newly arranged office.

“yea, of course,” she replies “you know, I do not know how to use that,” she says as she sat down on her desk.

“Really!” he replies in shock “why not come over let me show you a thing or two as I am trying to get us some coffee,” gesturing with his head for her to come.

It was just past noon and Hailey was invited to meet the board members of the company to be officially welcomed as the secretary of the company.

After meeting with the board members, she proceeded to have lunch just at the cafe across the road. The cafe was not that big, but it is a lifesaver because it is like the only cafe in that area, so after being in queue for a few minutes she is finally able to get a burger and a bottle of coke.

While she sat down to eat, a child came running through the cafe clipping her table causing her carbonated soft drink to spill all over her dress.

“Oh my God!,” Hailey shouted as her reflexes make her jerk back a little bit. “what am I going to do now,” she says as she tries wiping some of it off as much as she can with some serviette in the cafe.

Unhappy, Hailey leaves the cafe and walks back to her office all stained and wet. Her once beautiful day has now been ruined by this incident.

“you can have the day off,” Gabriel tells her seeing the state of her clothes.

“thank you so much, I am so sorry this is happening on my first day on the job, it will not happen again,” Hailey replies, looking depressed.

“Cheer up dear, and do not think about it too much,” Gabriel says, patting her on the shoulders.

He then offers to drop her off at her hotel.

“I am so grateful for how much you have helped me today,” Hailey says as she alights from his car and closed the door.

Once she got back to her hotel room, she took a warm shower and laid down to rest. She needed to build a pack to be able to fulfill her goal. Since she worked throughout the day she decided to use the nights to try and find members for her pack and that was when she went out to take a walk.
