What am I doing?
With all the strength she had, Hyacinth pushed Nikolai hard. Her weakness became only evident when a single push was not enough to make him back off. Anyone would melt with that stare of longing.
It felt so wrong to know that that wasn’t for her. The kiss was for someone who looked like her. The longing, the love, all those emotion… it was all not for her.
He kissed her, or was she the one who kissed him? Never mind. It didn’t matter. She let that happen, that was the only thing that counts. Including the shameful fact that she kissed him back. She did a series of things no sane married woman who is in love with her husband would do. It was simply unforgivable no matter how stupid or unexplainable the situation was.
The best thing to do was to stay away from Nikolai as far as possible. Whatever he had to say, she didn’t need to hear it. For the second time that day, she walked away.
“Elias, let’s go.” She whispered at her son who was already forming his little group of three friends which included Liam. After everything that happened today, Hyacinth could not bring herself to even look at the kid without loathing herself deeply.
It isn’t Liam’s fault. If anything, he had been nothing but a bundle of joy for her.
Everything that is happening is getting way out of hand. They are the adults in this situation. Hyacinth needs to prioritize and protect her own family. Kissing another person that is not her husband is not helping. She should keep her distance.
“Where, Mom?”
“We need to go home.” She was trying to keep her voice lowered so the other friends “Let’s go now.”
“You’re going, Teacher Hya?” Liam asked.
He wasn’t stopping her. He was simply asking and yet, Hyacinth is already consumed with guilt.
“I’m sorry, Liam. There’s an emergency. We have to go home.”
“What’s the emergency, Mom?” Elias asked.
Think, Hyacinth. Think.
Of all the time that she would become speechless, it happened to be that moment.
“Your father is looking for us.”
“Nah, Daddy can wait.” Elias ignored and continued to speak with the other two kids. They’ve gotten closer in a short amount of time. On the other hand, she should be proud.
Even before Elias and Liam met, she knew they’d get along. These two share the same interests and at times, even attitude. Liam reminded her of Elias when they first met. When she first met Elias, she was a stranger who was suddenly introduced as her mother. He may be innocent and young, but he wasn’t clueless. All that Hyacinth did was show her pure intention and sincerity.
“Miss Hya, can you stay for my birthday party? Please?”
There was an endless list of why she should say no. There are also a million ways to say it… but she can’t. She found herself nodding at Liam’s request. Hyacinth brushed her thumb against Liam’s cheek.
“Of course. Happy birthday, Liam.”
Trying not to get anyone’s attention at the party, Hyacinth found the most perfect spot in the far end of the crowd. She was invisible to the guests and kids who were mesmerized by the sea creatures and the magic tricks performed during the party.
There are two particular people that she wanted to avoid- Nikolai and that man who hugged her earlier. If she remembers it clearly, Liam called that man Preston. She was once again called Isobelle.
Seems like every grand change in her former quiet and calm life is because of that Isobelle.
It will most likely make sense if Hyacinth sees a picture of her and confirms their resemblance. Maybe, deny and point out differences too. That way, they can all accept what is happening, move on, and if possible, try to co-exist without causing trouble to each other.
The problem is, it was a fearful thing to find out the truth.
“What are you doing here? You’re not supposed to be here.” An older lady, obviously dressed in expensive clothing, tugged her elbows. She was raising her eyebrows, eyes wide in shock.
Oh, for crying out loud. Her drained energy was stopping her from politely dealing with the situation. Without saying anything, she pulled her arm back and walked away.
“Where do you think you’re going?” The woman followed her and was even raising her voice.
Hyacinth’s remaining strength was hanging by a thread, about to be gone any moment now.
“Mom.” Nikolai stopped her.
“Why is that woman here, Nikolai? She’s supposed to be dead!”
What kind of life did that woman Isobelle even live? People around her are either getting angry or crying hysterically. She began to ask questions and become curious about her. She sounded like a pandora box that Hyacinth didn’t want to know more about.
Her life sounded like trouble. The kind of trouble that she doesn’t want to bring into her own.
“Please fix this, Mr. Laurent.” The coldness in her voice was a warning to Nikolai. “I hope in the future, nothing like this or any unfortunate event that happened today, will never happen again.”
She needs her safe space. The day felt like a lifetime, and all she wanted was to join Jack in his bed and melt in his embrace. He’s the calm breeze that makes her feel secure. Before meeting him, her life was a roller coaster ride with an uncertain destination.
The best decision she made in her life was to say yes when Jack proposed and promised to give her peace.
“Hun, are you home?” She asked on the phone. The traffic light turned red.
“Ah, no. I’m in the office. There was an emergency, but I’ll be home soon. Are you coming home?”
“Yes. I’ll see you there?”
“See you, hun. Take care.” Jack’s voice was soothing. Hyacinth badly needs his comfort.
Instead of waiting for her husband at their house, she took a turn when the light turned green.
“Where are we going, Mommy?” Elias asked when he noticed that they were taking a different path.
“Let’s surprise, Daddy.”
“Yey! Let’s surprise Daddy!”
They drove to his office, all ready to catch him off-guard. To Hyacinth’s surprise, it was her who got played. She stood frozen outside the glass door. Instinctively, she covered Elias’ eyes while her own was locked on Jack who was french kissing another woman in the empty lobby of their office. Her secretary was straddled on top of him with exposed breasts.
Her world crumbled right before her eyes. She immediately imagined herself pulling that woman’s hair and strangling her neck. She wanted to confront her and ask her why she would do that to her husband. Ask her where did she find the audacity to steal a married man. She wanted to scream at the top of her lungs and cry like no one was around. In reality, her self-worth was gone even when she remained composed. She wanted to put all the blame on the woman when her husband seemed to equally enjoy the ass that was on his lap. She could not even bring herself to defend Jack. He willingly kissed and did even more with another woman.“Mommy, are you okay?” Elias asked.“Sweetie,” She sighed. “Mommy will make a quick call, okay?”
“Uncle Preston!” Liam’s face was painted with excitement. Preston made eye contact with everyone at the table where Nikolai was seated with Claudia and Liam. What a coincidence. His instinct was telling him to pretend he saw nothing, go straight to the bar, or go straight to the door. None of which was an option for a graceful exit.“Hey, Uncle Preston,” Liam called again. This time, it was impossible to pretend he didn’t hear. The kid was excitedly waving in his direction.“Hey, kiddo. Hi, everyone.”Claudia’s eyes lingered on the red wine. That was enough warning to walk away. If possible, run away.“Come join us, Preston.” Claudia invited before he could even think of an excuse. What’s going on inside that head of hers?“Nah, my workmates are arriving soon.”“Yeah, join us while you’re waiting for them.” Nikolai invited. He was lying when he said that they would arrive soon. He wanted to eat his lunch alone and drink a glass or two of wine. Since he saw the woman who looked so muc
20 missed calls and 50 text messages. Almost all were from Jack. She didn’t have to read each one to know what was the content of those. She couldn’t sleep. Her head is somewhere wondering about everyone and everything all at once. She was even doubting herself. She wished she had more time to think about her next actions… or even enough time to process things. She had the right to sulk and get angry. In this situation, though, it isn’t her place to keep Elias away from his father. “Where the hell have you been, Hyacinth? I’ve been calling you all night long.”Everything he said was immediately translated into betrayal. That’s what happens when people cheat. Things might get fixed, but it will never be the same. Betrayal costs trust. All the trust that took months to earn was gone instantaneously.“I’m with Elias. He is safe with me.”“Why did you not come home yesterday, honey? Everything alright?”“No.” Her voice started to break. “Things are not alright. My head is a mess right n
Preston had to be present at Nikolai’s company to negotiate a new acquisition agreement with the executives. He did well in the meeting. As always, Nikolai was impressed. He had proven himself in the corporate world. He earned even the top-level executive’s trust with just a month of working with Laurent AeroGlobal Enterprises. Having that on Preston’s work profile was enough boost for him to be known in their career circle. Nikolai and Preston’s partnership is certainly a win-win.Preston is a beast that fears nothing at work. When he’s no longer worried about financial records and contractual obligations, he’s left with his worries. What is he supposed to do now? This isn’t even a question anymore. Belle or as she prefers to be called, Hyacinth, came to him and trusted him with the truth. As a lawyer, he is obligated to represent her. As her brother, Preston wants to do more. He’s already studying her case and thinking of passing it to Lace. Family law is not something he’s great at
8 years ago…Nikolai was busy analyzing a case for a moot court competition.… will argue that the city breached its duty of care by…And now, he has to go back to reading the first part. Seems like legible, but hard-to-understand letters. This won't do. He can spend the whole night reading the case details and arguments but if he doesn't keep his shit together, this will be the mark of his downfall. All those words he said to his parents, to prove that studying Law for him would be put to waste. All because he loved a girl.It was getting counterproductive. The mild headache was a cry for a distraction and that was when he decided to go to the nearest bar. After all, he has mastered the art of drinking just the right amount of alcohol to be dizzy and not suffer through a damned hang-over the next day. After a few glasses, he could see doubles of everything. He found solace in an empty park and sat on the swing.“Nikolai.”That was probably too much drink. Even with his imagination,
The day he came to Houston…Nikolai still refuses to accept that Belle’s gone. There were a million possibilities that were forming in his head.Waking up was a challenge when the first thing he had to do every morning was to face his son alone. There may be a million possibilities, but the reality was too hard to accept. Coming home with his son and putting the search on hold was the hardest decision he had ever made.“Nikolai.”Stella’s face was the last thing he was expecting when he arrived. He handed his sleeping son to his new nanny. “Please let him rest. Let me know if he cries.”Stella scrutinized the clueless child until Liam was out of sight.“We need to talk-”“I’m tired, Stella.” He interrupted. He didn’t want to argue or even have a discussion at the moment. His body has reached its limits in terms of physical and emotional exhaustion. Nikolai’s body feels like and looks like a walking zombie with his crumpled clothes.“Alright. I understand. I just want to see you and
Katherine Isobelle is Preston’s sister. They lost both of their parents because of an accident when they were young.Katherine Isobelle was a photographer. She used to work in New Zealand.Katherine Isobelle was married and she has a son. She signed the divorce papers but according to Preston, they are still married, because the divorce didn't push through. She has Belle’s DNA and that means they are the same person. Even after knowing all these facts, Hyacinth still couldn’t fully process everything that happened. A lot doesn't make sense. If it would, no one but her could make sense of it all but until she gets her memory back, it would be impossible. This was the reason why she spent time away from everyone including Preston, who is the only person who knows the truth. He gave him these files about Belle that she needed to know and she has spent an ample amount of time studying herself like a person from History class. There was a scream at the park that surprised her. She though
“Hyacinth, I knew you would be back!”Should it be anger, jealousy, regret, or sadness? Hyacinth wasn’t sure what to feel first when she saw Jack after a long time. Perhaps it is a bit of everything. After what happened, she was sure that what they have is over. It probably ended long before she had an idea of him having an affair.“Why are you here in the office when we can talk at home? Honey, please. I can explain and I promise to be better. I made a horrible mistake, but I will still choose you, Hya. You’re the one I love.”“Really?”“Really. We’re married. Married people don’t throw away years of being together because of one foolish mistake. I guess, in our case, it would be two mistakes.”Is he with Jack because of desperation and confusion? The bigger picture is clearer for her now. Everything he said was stupid, if not fake. She let herself get fooled and got deceived by those lies.“I was about to file for a divorce.”Jack was shocked but recovered soon enough. “About to? Th
