“Uncle Preston!” Liam’s face was painted with excitement.
Preston made eye contact with everyone at the table where Nikolai was seated with Claudia and Liam. What a coincidence. His instinct was telling him to pretend he saw nothing, go straight to the bar, or go straight to the door. None of which was an option for a graceful exit.
“Hey, Uncle Preston,” Liam called again. This time, it was impossible to pretend he didn’t hear. The kid was excitedly waving in his direction.
“Hey, kiddo. Hi, everyone.”
Claudia’s eyes lingered on the red wine. That was enough warning to walk away. If possible, run away.
“Come join us, Preston.” Claudia invited before he could even think of an excuse.
What’s going on inside that head of hers?
“Nah, my workmates are arriving soon.”
“Yeah, join us while you’re waiting for them.” Nikolai invited.
He was lying when he said that they would arrive soon. He wanted to eat his lunch alone and drink a glass or two of wine. Since he saw the woman who looked so much like Belle, he had been drowning himself in work. It was a good distraction and a damn great energy-draining activity.
Also, Claudia is included in the list of people he wants to avoid. In fact, she might have the top spot.
“Actually…”
“Why, Prez? Caught your tongue?” There wasn’t an ounce of panic on Claudia’s face. Unlike him, her movement was as graceful as a swan. She should consider becoming a lawyer. Seems like the job is made for someone like her. She tapped the space with an empty chair. “Steak?”
He sighed. This lunch is a stomach ache in the making, for sure.
“Before you even jump to a conclusion, Claudia had no idea she was having dinner with me and Liam too. One of those match-making lunches my mother orchestrated.”
“I wasn’t saying anything.”
Nikolai raised an eyebrow. “Your face was saying something I am unsure how to interpret.”
Could it be that what Claudia said was true? That he is an open book and that even if he doesn’t say anything, he is screaming his thoughts silently? He gets commended with his poker face during hearings and meetings. That skill seems to start and end at work, unfortunately.
Claudia had not said a word and continued to munch on her steak. It was unusual for her, the queen of clapbacks, to stay quiet for a long time.
“Your birthday was so great, Liam,” Preston said, trying to fill the silence. “You were great too.”
“Thank you, Uncle Preston. Daddy’s the best for giving me the best party ever.”
He noticed that the boy was more cheerful and more expressive now. Nikolai was right to tell him to stop acting like a fool in front of Hyacinth. She is making a difference in Liam’s life. He still has his suspicions, but he comes to the realization that hugging Hyacinth as he did wasn’t the best action to take.
“Excuse me. I’ll go to the powder room for a minute,” Claudia excused.
Nikolai let go of his fork and knife the second she walked away. “There’s something going on here.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
I have to believe in myself first so it would sound like the truth. I have to be the first one to believe my lies.
He repeated like a mantra in his head.
“Claudia’s been silent since you sat here and you keep stealing glances at her.”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about” He was surprised. He was aware that he did glance once or twice. A maximum of two was too little to be classified, keep stealing glances like a stalker.
“You do, Uncle Preston. I saw it too.”
“Hey,” he stopped Liam. Now, the father and son duo are ganging up on him. “You guys eat. Focus on the food you're eating and mind your own business.”
“I swear, she didn’t come here out of her own volition. With those quick glances you stole, I’m sure you noticed how Claudia doesn’t know why she’s sitting at the same table as us either.”
“You look like a great family. You should marry her.” He didn’t care. That is also one of the things that he tells himself.
“You’re insane.”
Their conversation was cut off short when Claudia came back to the table. The four of them sat and ate in silence. Preston was sure that lunch would make it to his top 3 most awkward lunches ever.
When he got back to his office, he was compelled to stop whatever he was doing when a magazine’s new cover appeared. Gracing the cover was none other than Claudia. She looked like a goddess with her long curly blond hair and white silk dress. She really has her way of making simple become extraordinary.
‘Claudia Yvette is saying yes to eternal bliss some people call marriage. Click the link to know more about the young business tycoon who caught the heiress and socialite’s heart.’
The cursor was on the link. Preston’s eyes were glued on the highlighted link too. One-click was all it would take for him to know. He pondered long and hard.
The headline was enough to keep his head spinning. The curiosity was contributing to the headache he was feeling too. Even still, he’d rather continue his day with all these unanswered questions than actually knowing. Claudia said he wanted to get married and the man sounded like someone who would fit into her world. Young business tycoon sounded like someone suitable for Claudia. That was all he had to know.
“Attorney, someone’s looking for you.”
As far as he knows, she had no appointment with anyone for half the day. He arranged it that way so he had to see and talk to no one.
“Can you tell that person to come back when the appointment is made? I’d gladly listen to his or her case.”
“But, Sir. I’m sorry.” He sighed, but his secretary continued. “She said that if I told you the name Isobelle, you would say yes.”
Preston was speechless to see Hyacinth voluntarily walking into his office. The last time they saw each other, she was so determined to push him away. Even during the party, she would avoid him and when they would lock eyes, the woman would immediately look away like nothing happened.
“I need your help.”
Preston got distracted. Even her voice sounded like Isobelle.
“I need a lawyer. I have a few things I want to consult with you.”
20 missed calls and 50 text messages. Almost all were from Jack. She didn’t have to read each one to know what was the content of those. She couldn’t sleep. Her head is somewhere wondering about everyone and everything all at once. She was even doubting herself. She wished she had more time to think about her next actions… or even enough time to process things. She had the right to sulk and get angry. In this situation, though, it isn’t her place to keep Elias away from his father. “Where the hell have you been, Hyacinth? I’ve been calling you all night long.”Everything he said was immediately translated into betrayal. That’s what happens when people cheat. Things might get fixed, but it will never be the same. Betrayal costs trust. All the trust that took months to earn was gone instantaneously.“I’m with Elias. He is safe with me.”“Why did you not come home yesterday, honey? Everything alright?”“No.” Her voice started to break. “Things are not alright. My head is a mess right n
Preston had to be present at Nikolai’s company to negotiate a new acquisition agreement with the executives. He did well in the meeting. As always, Nikolai was impressed. He had proven himself in the corporate world. He earned even the top-level executive’s trust with just a month of working with Laurent AeroGlobal Enterprises. Having that on Preston’s work profile was enough boost for him to be known in their career circle. Nikolai and Preston’s partnership is certainly a win-win.Preston is a beast that fears nothing at work. When he’s no longer worried about financial records and contractual obligations, he’s left with his worries. What is he supposed to do now? This isn’t even a question anymore. Belle or as she prefers to be called, Hyacinth, came to him and trusted him with the truth. As a lawyer, he is obligated to represent her. As her brother, Preston wants to do more. He’s already studying her case and thinking of passing it to Lace. Family law is not something he’s great at
8 years ago…Nikolai was busy analyzing a case for a moot court competition.… will argue that the city breached its duty of care by…And now, he has to go back to reading the first part. Seems like legible, but hard-to-understand letters. This won't do. He can spend the whole night reading the case details and arguments but if he doesn't keep his shit together, this will be the mark of his downfall. All those words he said to his parents, to prove that studying Law for him would be put to waste. All because he loved a girl.It was getting counterproductive. The mild headache was a cry for a distraction and that was when he decided to go to the nearest bar. After all, he has mastered the art of drinking just the right amount of alcohol to be dizzy and not suffer through a damned hang-over the next day. After a few glasses, he could see doubles of everything. He found solace in an empty park and sat on the swing.“Nikolai.”That was probably too much drink. Even with his imagination,
The day he came to Houston…Nikolai still refuses to accept that Belle’s gone. There were a million possibilities that were forming in his head.Waking up was a challenge when the first thing he had to do every morning was to face his son alone. There may be a million possibilities, but the reality was too hard to accept. Coming home with his son and putting the search on hold was the hardest decision he had ever made.“Nikolai.”Stella’s face was the last thing he was expecting when he arrived. He handed his sleeping son to his new nanny. “Please let him rest. Let me know if he cries.”Stella scrutinized the clueless child until Liam was out of sight.“We need to talk-”“I’m tired, Stella.” He interrupted. He didn’t want to argue or even have a discussion at the moment. His body has reached its limits in terms of physical and emotional exhaustion. Nikolai’s body feels like and looks like a walking zombie with his crumpled clothes.“Alright. I understand. I just want to see you and
Katherine Isobelle is Preston’s sister. They lost both of their parents because of an accident when they were young.Katherine Isobelle was a photographer. She used to work in New Zealand.Katherine Isobelle was married and she has a son. She signed the divorce papers but according to Preston, they are still married, because the divorce didn't push through. She has Belle’s DNA and that means they are the same person. Even after knowing all these facts, Hyacinth still couldn’t fully process everything that happened. A lot doesn't make sense. If it would, no one but her could make sense of it all but until she gets her memory back, it would be impossible. This was the reason why she spent time away from everyone including Preston, who is the only person who knows the truth. He gave him these files about Belle that she needed to know and she has spent an ample amount of time studying herself like a person from History class. There was a scream at the park that surprised her. She though
“Hyacinth, I knew you would be back!”Should it be anger, jealousy, regret, or sadness? Hyacinth wasn’t sure what to feel first when she saw Jack after a long time. Perhaps it is a bit of everything. After what happened, she was sure that what they have is over. It probably ended long before she had an idea of him having an affair.“Why are you here in the office when we can talk at home? Honey, please. I can explain and I promise to be better. I made a horrible mistake, but I will still choose you, Hya. You’re the one I love.”“Really?”“Really. We’re married. Married people don’t throw away years of being together because of one foolish mistake. I guess, in our case, it would be two mistakes.”Is he with Jack because of desperation and confusion? The bigger picture is clearer for her now. Everything he said was stupid, if not fake. She let herself get fooled and got deceived by those lies.“I was about to file for a divorce.”Jack was shocked but recovered soon enough. “About to? Th
“Thank you for coming here, Belle.” Preston greeted her and opened the door of his home wider. It's Belle’s first time visiting Preston in a more relaxed setting. She figured it is time to proactively try and learn more about Katherine Isobelle because no matter how hard she tried, the memories aren't coming back. Time is a luxury she didn’t want to waste.Belle. She has to learn how to live as Belle.“I should be the one thanking you for accepting my invitation. Sorry for ruining any of your day off plans if you had any, Preston.”A quick glimpse of annoyance was on his face, and then it was gone. Preston laughed at his own actions, “I forgot for a moment there that you lost your memory. I thought you were teasing me or something.”Belle laughed. She has no idea what it feels like having a brother. Maybe before, but all of these feels new to her. Knowing that being herself reminded Preston of who she was before was a validation in a way that she has not lost her whole identity.“Why?
“Hi, kids!”“Miss Hya!” They collectively screamed. There was immediate chaos. The kind of chaos that Belle missed. There were a lot of chit-chats, but there were also a lot of smiles. Among the whole class, it was hard not to stare a little longer at the spot where Liam was seated. My son.Standing frozen, Belle was fighting the urge to run into Liam and apologize for leaving and causing him pain, for being absent to his past birthdays, for not recognizing him the first time they met. There was so much to apologize and so much time has passed.“Did you miss me?”“Yes, Teacher Hya.” The kids answered in unison. After finding out who she is even when her past memories have not come back yet, it was weird to hear the name Hyacinth. She loved being Hyacinth. In fact, her life was a dream. She had a loving husband, a precious son, and this work. Every day, she would find herself thanking the heavens for the life she had, because it felt like a gift. Something that wasn’t hers but was temp
