Chapter 36

“We are losing her.” Doctor Ian yelled,

“She’s coding!”

“Crash Cart!”

“Clear!!”

‘Somehow Maisie knew Luca we're gone. It was as though her soul was still longing, searching for him. Was he calling for her?

‘My dearest heart-’

‘Sad isn’t it though? To think you are still yearning for him. Sadly, I confess, yes, I still love him. I think - I think, even before I knew what those words meant I knew that I love him, even if he didn’t. I still so deeply loved him. Tell me though, how can I be an architect of my own life if I could not even control you? Every cell and fiber in my body can contest that these words are true. Oh, my dear heart, that once used to beat underneath my chest. Do you still think of this as beautiful?”

Kevin and Alice rushed into the hospital toward the emergency room.

“There is a young girl that was brought in a while ago, we are her family. Where is she?” Alice asked the lady sitting behind the reception desk.

“Give me a moment.” The lady said as she franticly typed on the computer without looking at the screen. “Yes, she was a girl drop off. The driver took off before we could get her identification. She’s in the operating room…” Before she could continue, they rushed toward the emergency room. The Lady stood up and screamed from behind,

“Hey! One you need to complete the admiration forms!”

A nurse looked rushed as she hurried down the hall toward the emergency room,

Kevin grabbed her arm and stopped her. She jerked her head toward him.

“What…”

“Is there a young lady inside?” Kevin asked.

The nurse frowned as she looked at him and then at his hand.

“Yes, there is actually. Who are you and please let go of my arm.”

Kevin’s demeanor was anything but friendly.

Alice came forward and held Kevin by the elbow.

“His, her brother, is she in the room?”

The nurse scoffed, as she pulled her arm out of Kevin's grip.

“As a matter of fact, there is a young lady inside. That's all I can tell you. Unfortunately, you need to wait for the doctor to inform you of the rest.” Leaving them with these words she rushed away and pushed the door open and hurried inside.

As the door opened Kevin caught a glimpse of the lady and at once knew it was Maisie. He could see things did not look good from the continuous beep of the machine.

“Again” The doctor called out.

Kevin’s eyes widened. He rushed toward the door but was pulled back by Alice.

“You can’t go in Kevin. We need to wait for her here. You will only distract the doctors and cause a delay.”

Kevin looked back at Alice and knew she was right. He ran his hands threw his hair,

“FUCK!!!!” Kevin screamed.

Alice looked at Kevin and felt so useless at that moment. They could do nothing but wait. Alice kept quiet as she stood beside him as they waited for the doctor.

Doctor Ian looked down at Maisie. He was in his late sixties. Looking down at her made him think of his own daughters. Doing this kind of job for all these years he knew he may not get emotionally involved, but he just never could control the feeling that welled up in his heart upon seeing cases such as hers.

“Doctor, you need to call it.” One of the attending doctors said.

Doctor Ian did not know why he felt so drawn to this patient, but he could not get himself to give up yet. The beep of the heart machine, which showed a flat line, kept echoing in the room. Ian felt his heartbeat picking up. He looked down at the girl who looked at white as the bedsheets she was laying on. Doctor Ian shook his head.

“NO- No. One more time.”

“But Doctor we have…”

“I SAID ONE MORE TIME!”

As the paddles were placed on her chest Ian leaned forward and whispered beside her ear.

“Choose life girl Choose Life… don’t you dare choose death. You need to fight this. Think about your family, your family is outside waiting for you. Wake up!”

“Doctor! Doctor.” The resident called out. “She’s gone we did everything we could. You can’t save them all.

Ian closed his eyes as he shook his head dejected.

“Time of death,” he opened his eyes and stared at the clock on the wall. “One...”

“Beep… beep… beep..” The sound of the heart machine caught everyone’s attention.

It felt like an eternity had passed when Alice noticed the door of the emergency room opened and two doctors walking out.

The surrounding noises felt as if they faded away and only the sound of the doctor’s shoes could be heard as they approached them.

“Kevin-Kevin” Alice gently nudged Kevin, who was sitting with his head bowed and his hands in his hair.

“The doctors came out,” Alice said gently.

Kevin was instantly on his feet and rushed toward the doctors.

“Doctor how is my sister,” he asked.

“Are you, her family?” The doctor asked first.

“Yes, I’m her brother.”

The doctor nodded, “I am Doctor Ian, The leading doctor on your sister’s case.” He paused before he continued, “I must say she scared us there for a moment but luckily, she’s a fighter. We lost her for a second, but she's fine now. She has woken up but is still in a critical condition. We are going to move her to her ward, but we are still going to keep a close eye on her.”

Upon hearing these words Kevin and Alice felt a little bit at ease.”

The doctor smiled as he patted Kevin on the shoulder.

Rushed footsteps sounded from behind them.

“Where is she? Where is my daughter.” Mrs. Rodriguez cried out.

Kevin turned around upon hearing his mother’s voice. She instantly rushed toward him.

“Kevin!”

“Mom!”

“Where is she?” The looks of fear and uncertainty could be seen on her face.

Kevin looked at his mother and then at his father’s.

“She’s fine, mom. She’s still inside. We were just talking to her doctor.”

His mother and father nodded as they turned to the doctor.

“Hello, Mr. and Mrs. Rodriguez. Like your son has said, your daughter is awake, but she is still in a critical condition. Her vitals are stable, but we still need to keep a close eye on her.” Mr. and Mrs. Rodriguez nodded as they listened as the doctor continued, they did not interrupt, afraid that they would miss something. When he was done informing them of everything, he bit them farewell and left.

Mr. Rodriguez turned to Kevin, with a stern expression.

“Have you dealt with them?”

“Yes. Nico is making sure we got everyone involved.”

Mr. Rodriguez nodded. His eyes caught a girl standing beside Kevin. He frowned upon seeing her standing right next to Kevin.

‘Kevin never allowed any women to stand so close to him.’ He thought to himself.

Before he could ask who, she was, the door of the emergency room opened and Maisie was pushed out.
