CHAPTER EIGHT

DANTE

In the coziness of my study room, I leaned over the mahogany desk which had a lot of work papers, I was conversing with my Beta when a brief knock interrupted us.

“Come in” I called out.

The door was pushed open and a white head pushed her head through the opening of the door. She flashed a lazy smile before she entered the room and closed the door tightly behind her.

She bore her neck before me in a bow “Reporting to the Alpha, The Alpha of the Mount Simian pack has agreed to close of the boundaries from their side, he is on our side, and also, I questioned the prisoners and the mole is no other than Demetrius Agacus, who is feeding information to a rogue posing to be a pack member, I wasn’t privileged to source out the mastermind or the identity of the rogue, because his wolf gave him an easy death, banged his head on the wall, this all, Alpha”

“Well done, Zeta” I granted her a nod.

I glanced at Adolphus, “The same pattern, huh”

“Yes, Alpha”

“We will do a clean sweep then, too much dirt to clean up” I couldn’t help a scowl. Whoever thought that they could infiltrate my pack from under my nose was utterly delusional.

“At ease, Blake”

“Oh my stars, I need a cool shower” She immediately cried, breaking away from the former attitude.

“Hey strangers” Blake plopped down next to Adolphus who scowled at her. He scrunched his nose and spat out “you stink”

She rolled her eyes which elicited a chuckle from me. “You lectured the swordsmen again”

I was sure she did. Whenever she was in a great mood, the swordsmen got a lecture from her, while she beat their asses.

She affirmed my claim with a smirk. “You know me so well Danny”

In an enclosed space, Blake and Adolphus were more than just my subordinates. They were my best friends since back in the days and that is why I let that awful nickname slide.

“You disappeared for a long time” Adolphus glanced at Blake.

“Yeah, I had to do a clean sweep, had a Likkle problem with some sexist rogues and you know how I love the smell of books, lost track of time in the library of the Mount simian pack. They really have a stock” a mischievous glint shone in her eyes.

“Hope you didn’t take any of the books with you?” Adolphus asked. “You really have a problem keeping your paws to yourself” He was right about the latter, when she went on missions to other packs, she always had the bad habit of sneaking into the library of the pack to take a ‘look around’. I gave her a free hand on that mostly because despite her obsession with reading and books entirely, she was really swift and clean and she cleaned her traces flawlessly.

“You missed me didn’t you?” She playfully touched his nose.

Those two, I mentally counted till beta would swat her hand away from his poor nose. 1- 2-3 and…

“Get your stinking paws off me” Adolphus growled.

“Stop behaving like children, will you” I Snorted.

“Ay ay” Blake raised her hand in mock surrender and Adolphus huffed.

“Speaking of which, I saw Luna at the courtyard, she was watching us from the window, she seemed quite fascinated watching the swordsmen” Blake reached to the side table to pour herself a cup of water, but stilled at my lack of response.

“Don’t tell me” She faced me, her face morphed in disbelief.

“You!”

I know right?

I could sense that beta shrunk to the background.

Coward.

“Let me guess, you haven’t spoken to her since the wedding night”

I coughed guiltily.

“Oh shit! Since I left?” Her voice thundered in a slight growl.

She knew how to be a mama among three of us.

“Dante that’s a new low” She whispered.

I groaned, ignoring the dull ache in my chest. I knew, she didn’t have to spell it out. But she didn’t understand.

Then make me understand” She stubbornly said. I must have said my thoughts out loud.

She continued either way “That girl may be a full blooded human but she doesn’t have malicious intent and you know that, she is married off to a slightly different species from hers and you left her all by herself on her mating night!”

“I was busy” I made an excuse. An excuse that I knew was extremely lame.

The girl was just too pure, I could see it in her eyes, I knew she tried to hide it but I saw it, I disagreed with Blake on this one because-

“I doubt the human would want to have sex with a wolf”

“Oh spare me that, She is going to stay here for the rest of her life, she will learn, she looks resigned to her fate, and no, I am not telling you to force love, I know you can’t but at least be a good husband will you?”

My brows rose at that tone. She was still in her mother wolf feelings and so I would forgive her tone. We were just friends in here and nothing like master and subordinate.

“There is something weird about her” Adolphus offered and I glanced at him sharply.

Did he notice too?

“She doesn’t smell entirely human” Blake interjected.

They both knew after all. I couldn’t keep a secret from these two.

“She is my mate”

“Yeah, of course She is your wife…” her voice trailed and her eyes widened a notch.

Even Adolphus shifted in his chair uncomfortably.

I too was shocked by this revelation.

“B-b-but she is not a Werewolf” Blake stuttered.

“Which is surprising” I leaned back on my chair.

“She doesn’t know and she still thinks like a human, she can be a traitor, she can run away. You know the humans are never sincere, I can’t be with her because …” I choked. Damn emotions.

I had come to terms that I wasn’t fated to have a mate because of the Pact which was to come. I was fated to be married with a human. That was the only information which the prophecy had divulged. It had hurt before, but burying my head in my Alpha duties ha numbed the pain. It was a touchy topic to the pack because the pack because they knew the fate of me. The mateless Alpha, if that was a word.

It was dead, my heart. Not until I saw her. I inhaled her scent, I drank in her face, and my wolf almost lost control.

It was weird at first. I stepped into the human palace and my heart was plunge into a painful twist, so painful that I almost lost my cool in front of the human folks. Then, I saw her. She stood, in her beautiful apparel, scared and listless. My Wolf was jumpy and ferociously happy, that it called out to her.

She heard it, which was weird. I knew she heard it, her eyes morphed into confusion when she looked at me, and her face twisted in pain.

I knew it.

I was shocked. Too shocked, a human was my mate?

That never happened in the history. The moon goddess never crossbred us. We had little contact with the humans.

When Blake said she loved the scent of the human girl, on her arrival to the pack and her wolf was excited to see the human girl, my suspicion increased.

I knew I had to stay away from her, I could lose control. From the little time I spent with her, I knew that my wolf would lose control, so until I got a hang on the situation, I did not want to see her.

“That’s…What if she is a half breed” Blake offered.

She was calmer now and she didn’t pry deeper, she knew me so well.

“Adolphus is still trying to do some researches.” I said. “The humans have a knack for covering their traces so well”

“Thank the moon, you arrived, you have more brains for this, you can take over” Adolphus tossed the job to her. In all truth, she was a really discerning and intelligent fellow. Well, those are the powers and quirks of Zetas.

“Have you met with the Park Council?” Blake asked. She turned to pour herself water again.

“No” I replied. “I think it is too early for the girl to meet with the council.”

“They will eat her alive with just her eyes” Adolphus piped.

Blake gulped down the water like a damn fish.

“She will meet them sooner or later, what’s the difference” She put down her cup and stretched her limbs with all those cracking sounds of her bones resounding in my ears.

“I feel sticky” She arose from her chair. “Still, don’t make her feel too dejected because when you finally want her, she may be out of reach, I heard humans are hard to woo”

A growl escaped my lips subconsciously.

“Just saying” She smiled. Wickedly, may I add.

“I have to be on my way” She nodded to me and harrumphed at Adolphus who rolled his eyes in return.

“Send my regards to Luciana; tell her, I will drop by at sun down to have a taste of her heavenly barbecue”

“Very well” Adolphus broke into a smile at the mere mention of his mate’s name.

Simp!

“I will be on my way too” Adolphus stood up.

Yes, and run to your mate. My wolf whimpered jealously in my head.

“Alpha” They both averted back to their reverent behaviors not to a friend this time but to their leader. They bowed and made their leave.

The door closed softly behind, leaving men to my thoughts and my nagging wolf.

“Alright, I’ll see her” I conceded to my wolf who promised to behave. Deeply, I knew it wasn’t just my wolf or my friends persuading me, I just wanted to see her too, those fascinating eyes, or slyly brush my fingers through her hair, the scent was heavenly, I swear; but you don’t see me agreeing openly do you?

Coward. My wolf sneered.

‘Together’ I snorted in reply.
