After Derrick's first and second attempts to kill Talon, Teddy couldn't risk her grandson's life any longer so she did something.

Well... after king Gabera's death, his magic as well as powers were supposed to get acquired by his successor Talon however something different happened when Derrick attained the throne after his father's death, so there he seized half of late king Gabera's powers. Yes...king Gabera's powers were shared between the two, Derrick and Talon thus making Derrick a little bit more powerful than Heron.

And if someone wanted to weaken him, he or she had to relive king Gabera but this time he'd come back as a mere powerless vampire however his powers would immediately leave Derrick if he tried summoning them because he got them through a wrong way.
