Normally, after a long day at school, I am in such a hurry to get home that I can hardly wait for seventh period to be over so that I can finally get a mental break, but this time, I didn’t even want to leave school. It wasn’t that I was having a grand ol’ time in my classes, especially when Brice didn’t show up all day, and Melanie and I were not speaking, but I knew, as soon as I got home, it was definitely not going to be a relaxing evening.Maje Jaye was waiting for me at the door again. She reminded me a lot of a puppy who had been left home alone all day and just needed some human attention. Nuthatch was there, too, of course, but he didn’t count. When Mage Jaye saw me, her face lit up, and she said, “Harlow, guess what? The students and staff are on their way! Isn’t it lovely?”I could’ve thought of a

Heart to Heart
“Tell me Brice. We’re friends. I can handle it.”“Okay,” he said, sucking in air. “I’ve been lying to you, to all of you, because I didn’t know how you’d handle what I’ve been doing.”A million scenarios ran through my mind as I tried to guess what he was talking about. The only thing that I could think of that would make me angry at him would be if he really was Starla’s baby’s father. “Just tell me, Brice,” I said.“All right. So… this girl I’ve been seeing… isn’t a girl.” He looked up at me, and I couldn’t help but let my forehead crinkle as I tried to comprehend what he was saying. “I know I went along with it and probably even said ‘she’ a few times. But that&rs

The Arrival
When I got back to the house, it seemed like everyone was happy to see Brice. Even Melanie was apologetic and had said she was sorry for accusing him. I couldn’t help but smile to know that my entire pack was back together again. Except, of course, for Sam who was with Starla still. But… at least Brice was back, and everything within the pack itself was good again.Which isn’t to say everything was good. I’d gotten a text from Kayla a few minutes after dinner that said that they’d just arrived at the airport. I had no idea who all was with her. I didn’t ask any of my other friends if they were coming, and if they were, they probably didn’t have a lot of time to let anyone know since Mage Jaye had asked so quickly and hastily. It was a long trip back from the airport, and I had school the next day, so I had no reason to

Zap!
I couldn’t believe my eyes! Fionna Flamingo was standing in my yard, looking absolutely lost and forlorn, like a little puppy who’d lost her littermates, and the rest of the mages were traipsing off into the woods with absolutely no regard for the little lady whatsoever. If Mage Jaye was suddenly under the impression that I was going to be going back to babysitting Fionna, she had another thing coming. I was just about to shout out to one of the mages that they lost their Flamingo when I realized Starla was shooting across our shared yard in my direction, a bewildered and angry look on her face. “Harlow!” she shouted, gaining my attention. “What the hell is all of this?”She was on the porch by the time I had formulated an answer. “What do you mean?” I aske

The Ugly Truth
“Starla, you don’t mean that, do you?” Sam asked, his voice shaking a little bit as he looked into the eyes of his fated mate who had just declared she didn’t care about the baby inside of her.“I do mean it, Sam!” Starla shouted, scooting backward, away from him. “I just want all of this to be over!”I felt like I shouldn’t be there, like this was a private conversation that had nothing to do with me. Especially when Sam asked his next question.“Is it mine?”“Sam….” Starla tipped her head to the side, a pleading expression on her face as tears filled her eyes. “Please, don’t do this right now.”“Is it mine!” Sa

Waking the Dead
“Oh, my god, Fionna! What did you do!” The words left my mouth as I lunged forward toward Sam, praying that whatever the other mage had done to him, it wasn’t permanent. She’d zapped Starla pretty good before, but it wasn’t something I couldn’t fix. This time, Fionna seemed even more agitated than she had the last time, so there was a possibility she’d tossed more in the wolf shifter’s direction, but the fact that Kayla, Liam, and I had attempted to intervene might have been enough to at least spare his life, I thought.I knelt down next to Sam and felt for a pulse. He had one, but it was weak and inconsistent. I immediately started barking orders to everyone around me like a general on a battlefield. “Ben--run and get Mage Jaye, or someone with a lot of power. I’m about tapped.”He nodded and sh

Pieces
“What do you mean you don’t remember anything, Sam?” I asked, my heart thundering in my chest. “How can you not remember anything?”“I don’t know,” he admitted with a shrug, still looking as lost as he had when he first opened his eyes. “It’s like… my mind is completely blank.”“Have you ever seen anything like this before?” Raven asked Maggie. She shook her head. “No, I’ve never seen anyone hit with a jolt of magic lose their memory before.”“Magic?” Sam asked. “What are you talking about? I wasn’t hit with magic. Magic’s not real.”A gasp left my lips as I looked from Maggie to Raven. Th

Alone
I walked back into Sam and Starla’s house as quietly as I could, in case Sam was sleeping. Raven, Melanie, Joshua, and Tony were still sitting in the living room, talking quietly. “How is he?” I asked.“I took him some water a little while ago,” Raven said, “but he was sleeping, so I just set it by the bed.”“What are we going to do?” Melanie asked. She had a worried look on her face, which wasn’t unusual for Melanie because she worried about a lot of things, but in this case. I couldn’t blame her. I was worried about Sam, too. “Maggie suggested we let him get some sleep and see how he is in the morning. If he still can’t remember anything, she said she’d see what she could do

Not Okay
I had to go to bed. I had no choice. Even with Starla in the hospital, bleeding, Brice wearing Sam’s face around, Sam not remembering a damn thing about anything, and Fionna in my back yard, capable of burning the world down with a flick of her wrist, I was exhausted. Making Brice look like Sam was it for me. I couldn’t handle any more activity that night. As it was, I had to get up to go to school in something like four hours, and that meant I was going to be one cranky witch the next morning.Mage Jaye had said I had one more day at WHHS before I had to transfer to the school for mages I’d just build, but I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to do that as soon as she wanted, especially if I couldn’t find a way to drag my butt out of bed the next day.Ben laid down with me, but I knew he wouldn’t stay long. Not for the first

Too Much
I did what I was supposed to do. I went to school. It wasn’t easy. In fact, it was one of the most difficult things I’ve ever done. I spent the entire day lost in my own thoughts and even screwed up my grades because I wasn’t paying attention while I was doing my work, including a quiz in math. Staying home would’ve been a better idea. At least I would’ve had the chance to make up my assignments when I was feeling better. The only problem with that was I had no way of knowing if I would ever feel better. It seemed like every time I turned around, there was another problem that needed taking care of, and I was the only one capable of fixing them. And as I was finding out, I couldn’t fix everything. The rest of my pack was just as out of sorts as I was. At least Brice was back at our table in art and sat with us a
