Negotiations
After a night in the barn of a generous farmer—for they thought a night in the open would be too risky—and another early morning, the group made it to the city of Obsequence. It was so named by one of Aurora's ancestors who conquered it. The town at the time not only didn't fight the invading force, but actually welcomed them, throwing out their own terrible leader to be captured. Now it was a bustling city full of traders and merchants. Junayd went ahead of them and bought new clothing for them to wear. The style here was in general less flashy than the capital, and the soldier returned with simple garments to help them fit in."What's this?" Aurora held up a long piece of light brown cloth."It's for your head. Some men and women wrap them around their hair and face to block the sun. I figured it would hide your appearance, Your Majesty." Junayd said. Aurora had seen nobility from the desert region southwest of Valiant visit occasionally, so she had an id

Emotions
Gandr had been looking at the shiny baubles at a jewelry stall for quite some time. He didn't like humans at all, but they did have some pretty things. He could dig up stones and gems, but Gnomes lacked the skills or patience to cultivate them into works of art such as these. Gandr was also trying to keep his mind off the events of the day before. He hated what Cafer had ordered him to do. He was a highly trained soldier. In a real battle, Gandr had no trouble removing an enemy's head, but putting a poison needle in an unsuspecting girl was not the same. When he had danced with Aurora weeks before, he had sensed her feelings through his magic. The gnome had experienced her joy and fear, and it had affected him. 'Blasted humans and their feelings' he thought bitterly. But it didn't matter now; the Empress was dead by his hand, and the best distraction would be buying as many shiny things as his purse would allow. "How much?" A sweet voice beh

The Gnome's Motivation
Cafer headed into a daybreak Council meeting. It had been two days since receiving the mirror message from Gandr about the death of Aurora. Since receiving the news, Cafer had been practicing his most aggrieved expression so that no one would suspect his involvement. Although he seldom felt happiness, this was as close as he had come in a long time. "It's going to be a good day," he muttered to himself. With Aurora gone, he could mold young Alaron into a true Emperor and use him to bring the gnomes into power. Cafer's long years of service would finally bear fruit. Cafer was sure the news of Aurora's death must have come in the night. Why else would such an early meeting be called? As everyone gathered around the table, they could see Zan's face was grim. "Councilmen, we have received word from the Empress's traveling party. Something has happened." Cafer braced himself for the wonderful news. Zan went on, "There has been an attempt on the Empress's life."There was an

Pick your Poison
It had been three days since they left Obsequence when Aurora decided to change back into the Guardian's cloak and her regular dress. Devrim did not like the idea, but she pulled rank and ignored him. She had dutifully worn the headdress to hide her face and hair, but she saw no reason to do so in the middle of the wilderness. For that is where they were now. Aurora wrapped the cloak around her shoulders and felt an immediate sense of calm. The scarf around her face had kept the sun off of her, but the cloak's hood actually brought a coolness to her warm skin. Devrim gave her a weary look as she sighed contentedly. They walked along side by side."You know you will eventually have to return that cloak, right?" He reminded her."I know," Aurora said defensively."You just seem like you are getting attached.""Did you see what this thing did at the inn when that idiot tried to touch me?" Even though Devrim could not see Aurora's face beneath the hood, he co

A Deadly Drink
"Who would like a drink?" Gandr, disguised as Nurlan, passed out the water. His hand almost wouldn't let go of the water-skin as he gave it to Aurora. She had to wrench it out of his grip. She eyed him quizzically but said nothing. Gandr reclined on the ground and waited for the Empress to take a drink. At present she was too busy munching on dried meat. "How much longer to the ice barrier?" She asked between bites. "At least three weeks," Gandr answered without thinking. Junayd was surprised. "I didn't realize you spent time up north, Nurlan." Gandr laughed awkwardly, which only increased the confusion of the others. "I haven't. I just studied maps before we left." "Really?" Junayd was unconvinced. "I thought you said that this whole trip was a waste of time. Sorry, Empress." Aurora was not offended. The whole mission did sound crazy. And she, too, was growi

Another Visitor
Aurora told the soldiers what she knew about the gnome that was tied to a tree. They had not heard about the events at her birthday party, and they were astonished. "You are trying to tell me that magic is real?" Nurlan was still skeptical. Nothing about the sleeping powder thrown in his face had seemed particularly magical. "You didn't see it," Junayd interjected. "He looked exactly like you." "Exactly, huh?" Nurlan rolled his eyes. When all three nodded, he sighed. Maybe they weren't joking with him after all. Gandr had had enough of their banter. "Magic is real. You humans cannot even comprehend the power that comes with magic! My kind will come for you. The gnomes will rule over humankind or destroy you all." "But since you can't use magic on us… you have to be more sneaky." Devrim was catching on. "Magic and humans don't mix. I am paying the price

The Stag
Another week of traveling passed with just Devrim and Aurora. They had expected their companions to catch up with them, but it had yet to occur. The Empress and Emperor Consort took turns leaving marks on trees so that the soldiers would be able to find their path more easily. Overall, they were slow moving, and the Empress began to question her own ability as a leader. Fortunately in this sparsely inhabited forest, game was plentiful. The Empress had stored a bow and quiver in the Guardian's cloak, and Nurlan had taught her the rudimentary skills of field dressing whatever they shot. She could cut away the meat and cook it. Aurora and Devrim lived mostly off of meat and a few known plants. They were careful not to consume anything that looked unfamiliar, and that list grew by the day. The further north they traveled, the more beautiful and strange the foliage and animals became. "Do you think any of these things are edible?" Devrim whispere

A New Concern
The road to the military outpost was difficult. The soldiers and their captive kept running into sheer walls of rock or canyons that were not marked on their maps. What should have been a day or two of travel stretched into a week. Gandr was completely unhelpful. He alternated between a vicious grin and groaning in pain from headaches as he felt Junayd's emotions. Every time Gandr stopped, Nurlan threatened to pick him up and carry him. It was enough to force the little gnome onward. After the fifth dead-end wall that morning, Junayd turned to Gandr, "You are the one doing this, aren't you?! The only place I've seen cliffs like these is west of Oblivion and we are nowhere close to them." Junayd pointed backwards. "And behind us, there is only flat, beautiful ground. I swear that ground to the left was a canyon not fifteen minutes ago."Gandr smiled but it did not reach his eyes. "You must be mistaken. I see no canyon."Nurlan shoved the gnome. "I think you are o

Pas de Deux
The forest thinned and the air became cooler. They were growing nearer to the ice barrier. Aurora found once again that she was very glad for the Guardian's cloak. At times in the evening, she could see her breath, but the strange black cloth kept her warm. As Devrim had no such luck, he wore a thick fur-lined coat that he bundled around himself to sleep. The days were still warm, but not hot like they had been.Since leaving Junayd and Nurlan, Devrim had given up his overtures of love for the time being. They were alone, and despite his desires, he was afraid of making things awkward. If she accepted him, then they might do something they would regret. He longed to hold her tightly, but he wanted it to be her genuine desire and not a decision based on fear of the unknown. Devrim wanted to do things right. Her honor was his highest priority. On the other hand, if Aurora rejected him, they would still have to finish their journey and return home together. He pictured her stayi

What's a Selkie?
Aurora's and Devrim's eyes grew wide. Not only were the gnomes stopping, they were going fishing! Was the seal wrong; could gnomes swim? Or did they possibly have a boat?"Why do I have to fish? I did it last time!" a gnome with a smashed nose whined. It was obvious that confrontation was a specialty of his."Because you are a hair taller than everyone else so you can walk a little deeper…and because I don't like you!" The red cap dwarf answered. The other dwarves jeered at the complainer. He quickly separated from the group along with a mousy-looking gnome in a light brown cap. The two gathered nets from their supplies and trudged into the water. The gnomes on land set up a makeshift camp complete with a fire and stools pulled from their packs. For mostly living underground, they were well equipped for life above the surface.Aurora and Devrim clung to the boulder in the water. Although they were not in danger of freezing, the constant lap of the small w
