Chapter 21
EMMA Coffee was just as important to my well-being as air was. The coffee pot beeped, and I sighed happily. Thank heavens that it was done. I eagerly filled up my cup and added just a bit of cream before taking a long sip. The delicious caffeine was exactly what I needed this morning. I had a shit night for sleeping. There were maybe three hours of actual sleep if I was being generous. Then my mind decided to kick into overdrive, ensuring that I got no more sleep. It was a relief to get all of that off my chest with Ethan yesterday. But it also made me think about things that I had pushed away for so long. Granted, now I realized that refusing to deal with all the shit I went through was the wrong move. I never worked through it all, so I would have to find to deal with it and finally let go of the pain. I was worried about what would happen now that those memories were fresh again. Eight years of memories was a lot to work through, and I was worried that they would break me in hal

Chapter 22
EMMA I was pulled from sleep with a sharp knock on my door. “Go away,” I grumbled. I buried my head underneath my pillow. It was too early to deal with anyone just yet, but apparently the idiot on the other side of the door failed to get the memo. The knocking continued until I jumped out of bed and flung the door open. “What do you want, Ethan?” I asked, saying every word with a distinct pause. I was running on about an hour of sleep. I just wanted to pass back out, but he was keeping me from doing that. Sleep was something that I never had have in spades, so I coveted every moment of it that I actually got. He was a monster for trying to split up me and sleep. Ethan leaned against the doorframe, dressed in a pair of black shorts and grey tank top. It showed off his sculpted muscles and tattoos. His hair was styled perfectly as always. Both Xander and him had the sides shaved and top longer, but Ethan styled his hair while Xander looked like he just rolled with it. I had yet to

EMMA I thought about what he said. I knew I liked Xander. Maybe he was just having as much conflict with this as I was. I dared another look at him. He looked up and smirked right at me. I could not help but return it. Perhaps Diana, Sylvie, and Ethan were right all along. Although, I would never tell Ethan that or else his head would grow even further. Ethan chuckled, obviously catching the smirk war. “Now, go join that group,” he pointed to a group of six people. All eyes were on me when I approached the group. I kept myself from running back to the packhouse, so that was a plus. Little steps. It would take time to branch out from the habits formed at Blacktree. I needed to get used to overcoming my aversion to being near people and interacting with them. A tall redhead smiled and bounced up to me. They all looked around my age, so I wondered what their fighting style was like. “Hey, I’m Freya. You’re new right?” Her voice was very upbeat and peppy, which was like how Marsey no

Chapter 24
XANDER I headed out to the training grounds a bit early to get things going. This tournament was a great idea proposed by the squad. It would shake things up, and I was eager to see how well everyone’s hard work was paying off. People fought harder when they had something to fight for. Offering up a coveted patrol position was enough to attract seventy-three contestants. Not a bad turnout. This also meant these people took their training seriously. Our training protocols were the best of any pack we had ever met. No, that was not me being a smug Alpha or anything. Other packs often sought us out for training their warriors. There were various packs that we sent our best warriors to keep their warriors on their toes, implement new training protocols, and make sure their new recruits had every advantage for success. There was bound to be a lot of potential mixed in with horrors of inadequacy in our own pack during this tournament, but all in all it was still a good idea. Today was a

Chapter 25
XANDER He sniffed the air again and took off running in the direction of the scent. His paws thudded against the ground with every step he took. Energy thrummed throughout his body while he chased the scent. The closer he got to the scent, the stronger the energy thrummed. That was certainly new. Neither of us had ever felt that before. His body wove in and out of the trees with ease and quickly made it to the training field, where the scent was coming from. The floodlights were on, meaning someone was there. He carefully and quietly crept closer but still utilized the cover of the shadows to remain hidden. The person did not have to turn around for me to know exactly who it was. The blonde hair floating behind her was a dead giveaway. Emma’s back was to us, so she still had not noticed we were hiding in the shadows. Part of me wanted to leave and give her privacy, but another part of me was rooted. ‘Vanilla honeysuckle,’ Kai said taking another deep breath. He found her scent j

Chapter 26
XANDER Emma left breakfast for us on the counter and was gone before we left for training. It was like she was avoiding us which I hated. She did not have to deal with life alone anymore. “She’s had a lot of shit thrust at her lately.” I sighed, scrubbing my hand over my face. I was not about to tell Ethan about last night. It was a private moment, one that I was not quite sure she would have liked me being a part of. Kai, on the other hand, was thrilled that she wanted to spend time with just him. We still could not get over how carefree she was with a strange wolf. It was the first time that she saw Kai before. Yet, she spent time with him like it was just another person beside her. He loved that. “Yeah. I couldn’t imagine going through life like she did. She’s free and safe here, but demons of our past haunt us all,” he said. Ethan was right. My demons still haunted me. It was nothing like Emma’s past, but I still felt like I failed my family and my pack with the war and what c

Chapter 27
XANDER She moved her body until she was laying against his side and watched the stars above. It felt completely natural, and she seemed much happier than earlier today. If she liked watching the stars, she would love the view from the mountaintop that could be seen from her window. There was an entirely unobstructed view up there. It was one of my favorite places to go actually. It was quiet for a little while. Emma looked out at the water, lost in thought. She looked like she wanted to say something, but she stopped herself. Kai nudged her, causing her to smile. “You’re easy to talk to. It’s not because it’s me hearing my own voice. Trust me. That would be very lame. It’s because I know you’re talking back to me. Today kind of sucked. Well, the past two days kind of sucked to be honest. That’s why I was at the training field. I was trying to release some issues. I’m sure you don’t want to hear all this. Tell me about you,” she said, trying to change the topic. Kai nudged her agai

Chapter 28
XANDER Was it possible that Emma actually had an aura like he mentioned? I never heard of it before, but that did not meant it was an impossibility. Emma was a unique creature all around. I was beginning to understand that I should not underestimate anything in terms of her because she surprised me at every turn. Her personality, her affinity to give her all, her kindness, her abilities, and everything else. One reason she frustrated me so much was because I could never get her out of my head, but it seemed like she was not having the same problem. Ethan said she had the hots for me, and with that declaration to Kai, perhaps I had actually been mistaken. On the stairs, it seemed like she did. I badly needed to test that out because my control was slipping. Had she not maneuvered around me on the stairs, I was prepared to just give in and smash my lips onto hers whether she wanted me to or not. I laid on my stomach, trying to fall asleep, but the revelations of tonight really kept m

Chapter 29
EMMA Xander’s sudden chattiness and openness was confusing, but I surely was not complaining. Talking to him was easy, and I appreciated how he let me open up instead of demanding answers. Ethan was right. He really was not a bad guy once you got to know him. There was more to him than I originally thought. That would teach me to not look beyond someone’s exterior. Although, it was a very sexy exterior. Perhaps I had been too quick to pass judgement on him. Sometimes my insecurities got the best of me. He really seemed to be putting forth an effort. The look in his eyes when I turned around and noticed he was in the kitchen would forever be etched into my memory. The hunger in his eyes made my stomach twist in knots. I wanted to push him up against the wall and kiss him, but I was not going to ruin the chance to actually talk to him. I felt like we made progress in the kitchen. Quickly, I made it to the bedroom and changed into something more suited for a trek outside than pajamas.

Chapter 30
EMMA The image was too much, and a furious blush hit my cheeks. He seemed damn well amused by the blush. “Where was your mom in all of this?” he asked me after a moment. My mother was never a mother. She was a monster. She worked so well with Ezekiel and Heath. I had always thought she was part of the reason they attacked the pack, but I never found proof. The feeling in my gut told me it was true though, and my feelings were never wrong. “She was there. She said Ezekiel used his Alpha command to make her comply, but I never believed her. When they thought I was knocked out with the wolfsbane, I’d hear her talking to them about my progress. She acted as if I was some fucking science experiment. She was the one to give them ideas on how to break me. She said I was weak and would submit one way or another. If a certain tactic didn’t work, she would give them bright new ideas of how to destroy my will.” My mother and I were never close. Once Papa was killed, it was like all pretenses
